I think neptunes are pretty different breh

I guess
but if they're different then so is 9th Wonder

and he summed up his whole sound in one sentence... he picks samples that Pete Rock would pick then chops them like Preemo would

Dre <--Prolly the most important to the game. Expanded Hip Hop past New York, give the culture and the music more depth.

RZA <---- Birthed the Soul Sample/ Movie dialect/ gave Kanye a blueprint (literally :youngsabo: ) etc.

Neptunes/Dj Quick <---- Made Synths, Chorus, Melodies a staple in hip Hop

Dr. Dre (everything), Premo (the drums, hooks) and Rza (the hardcoreness & soulfulness)
Practically those 3 put up all the grounds that dope hiphop production lies on from the late 80s to 2012.

Honorable mentions Lil Jon, Mannie Fresh, Rick Rubin, Marley Marl & Shawty Redd.

Mannie Fresh was probably the first big producer who started the production style of today.

1. DR DRE (obviously)... the west coast wouldn't be whut it is without the legacy of DRE

2. TIMBALAND... i dunno how or WHY people keep overlooking one of the most talented gifted producer that ever graced black music in general. the CURRENT hiphop sound TODAY sounds like shyt he done a half a DECADE ago. he ALWAYS stay ahead of the times.

3. PRINCE PAUL... the most underrated producer EVER. they wouldn't be a RZA without prince paul paving the way. they wouldn't be a backpack rap sound either... there wouldn't be A LOT of producers in the game had it not been for paul expanding the ways to craft beats, albums, ect... from being the originator of putting skits. to the concept album. to obscure sampling...everything!

somewhere between a pair of D cup tiddies
quick never changed anything, he is an amazing producer tho.

dre changed the game at least once, maybe twice.
quick sure got a lotta that sound from dre.

rza, obviously.

you can make a case for el-p. he made makin weird beats ok :manny:

same for kanye when he let his guard down and stepped out the closet.

but i'd go for timbo as well, ya'll know he's been talked about on here lately for good reason. he certainly brought a new dynamic to music in the 90's

Timbo for black music = yes.
Hiphop, I can't see how. He had classic club bangers and shyt, but nothing of the levels of cats like Premo. R&B on the other hand, that's another discussion for another forum. Timbos classic hiphop joints besides commercial club bangers Like big pimpin, Snoop dogg, Dirt of your shoulder and missy songs are not many. Probably less than 10.

all the kung fu movie samples...

plus his shyt from The Killer he used all over OB4CL made it seem more.... cinematic.... It was a great callback to the 36 Chamber skit, too: "A yo Meth, where my Killer tape!?"

Hell, give RZA props for even tying all of the early Wu albums together. Sampling songs used on previous wu albums for the next Wu album, sampling media named dropped...

hell, give him props for singlehandedly giving 9 MCs totally distinct voices mood and beat wise. You can tell he produced both Ironman and Liquid Swords.... but the shyts sound and feel totally different.

If that flood hadn't wiped out RZA's basement on some divine retribution shyt and made him start his "plan" over from scratch.... maaan...
