Watched Urusei Yatsura remake episode 1. It is kinda faithful to the original with some notable differences - several jokes were cut out, less bodily injury for Ataru, design and episode order changes. The animation and overall aesthetic looks great, voice acting felt natural to the character personalities. This is clearly a more accessible version of UY for the modern era, but it doesn't make the original obsolete in any way b/c of these changes. Some for the better, some worse depending on how you look at it.
One difference is when Ataru chases Lum in the original to win the competition, he tries a bunch of desperate gimmicks that wind up getting him lifted off in a stretcher. Like so
In this version the competition is more streamlined, and there's less commentary by the community which is weird considering the fate of the world is being decided by whether he wins or not.
In the original Ataru gets electrocuted by Lum soon after winning the competition as a warning, which is the earliest sign of her being possessive/unstable which more or less ruins his life for the foreseeable future. In this version that happens a day afterwards under different circumstances. Not quite the same punchline as Ataru going from the peak of his life to rock bottom in a matter of seconds, really emphasizing how unlucky he is.
Shinobu rakes Ataru in the face kinda graphically in the original b/c he was being stupid as usual. In the remake its just a couple of quick static frames. She's probably going to be way less violent in this version. Perhaps for the better since she regularly beats the fukk out of this guy throughout the series. Its a lil excessive to say the least.
Episode order is different - the second half of this week happens in episode 11 of the original, and I really don't agree with that decision at all. But then again not even the original anime follows the manga order, so all three versions are just their own thing it feels like. Time will tell which is better.

. It was well done though. Had a Villain commander looking like a straight bytch
My favorite anime of 2019.
