If you grew up with shyt like Gantz and Claymore, AoT really ain't anything new outside of the Titans as a type of bizarre adversary and the maneuver gear.

shyt, since we're talking adaptations - AoT's animation was so far ahead of the manga's art at the time that its actually ridiculous and unfair to other projects who deserved better from the start.
Claymore is one of my favorite manga (I got the box set) and they do have similarities, it's clear there was some inspiration. But I believe AoT has better plot twists and better execution of some story beats. With some story work and if Wit adapted it, Claymore would make some noise in 2022, but...

Using your logic, once you reach a certain age no story (anime, manga, live action, etc) is impressive, as storytelling is essentially the same. That's why I focus on execution, and I believe AoT's execution (at least what's been adapted so far) is top tier.

Also Gantz is severely overhyped. I'm about to go read Claymore again.

My logic really ain't the goalpost though lol. AoT, from the Wall reveal on, fell off a cliff and never finds another equally high point afterward. Its not some benchmark in story telling. Its okay to not be impressed with some stuff.

I had to look up a clue about Aki's death after that teaser. Probably shouldn't have.

Arknights..... I wanna like the show. But it's [jackie chan emoji]
I’m on episode 6… man it’s just there. Doctor fragile as shyt and episode to episode they don’t do a good job of building tension. It’s high production quality mid at this current point.

Someone in the thread said it’s based on a game so it can be a bit of a drag but that didn’t deter me. :manny:

Made a quick tier list for Fall '22 anime. With notes.

my-image_11.png

  • (Action/ SoL) Mob Psycho S3 being easily my AOTS and also imo the best anime that aired this year. Another great season from Mob Psycho and easily one of the goat adaptations. Great characters, great action, great storytelling, etc. Any anime fan must watch it.
  • (Gundam/Action/Drama) Witch From Mercury is a show that has been phenomenal and it has down an amazing job setting everything up. Now it is up to part 2 to execute what has occurred. But part one has been amazing in what it was set out to do.
  • (Comedy/Music/SoL) Bocchi the Rock is def the biggest surprise to me. Definitely one of the funniest animes I have watched this year. You can also tell that so much heart went into this adaptation. If you are looking for a laid back comedy, this is an easily recommendation. Also if you deal with social anxiety that is even more plus for this show.
  • (Action/Drama) Akiba Maid War imo is the best original from the year. At first it looks like just another entertaining fukkery anime. But it utilizes the use of maids to tell Yakuza story with top tier action and writing. Can't recommend this enough.
  • (Comedy/SoL/Action) Spy x Family is mostly a continuation of what it was in part one. But once again it executes to such a degree. We go from Spy Action with dog bomb arc at the beginning of this part. But we still get the SoL comedy with Anya at school and Yor with her cooking. Bond and Fiona have been added to the cast and both have been written very well. Again this is more SoL then action.
  • (Action/Drama) Cyberpunk is proof that an anime can blow up using a binge model. It takes the setting of a game that fell under a lot of scrutiny. The ride of this show is absolutely insane and a nice change from what we normally see in anime.
  • (Iseaki/Action) Reincarnated as a Sword is a show that starts with a meh first impression. But as you continue to watch it you become more and more impressed. It doesn't go for the majority of the Generic Isekai stuff you usually see. Fran and Master's relationship is well executed. And even tho the duo is a very strong one they still are routinely challenged. Not to mention the action here is great
  • (Action/Historical) Golden Kamuy is one of the more underwatched shows. Great action, characters and comedy. It is a show where so many characters are fukked up in their motivations that everything is not black or white. The delay here really sucks because it ended up on a brutal cliffhanger.
  • (Action) CSM was a super entertaining anime. The last fourth of it did setup the world very well to the case I am very excited how they go about the future arcs. Def will be hard to not be tempted to jump on the manga.
  • (Drama) To Your Eternity is a show the fell off towards the end of S1 and was rough initially in S2. But once the Prince arc starts this show is back to the form it had in the Gugu arc. Amazing storytelling and as Fushi becomes more human his struggles become more and more intriguing.
  • (Battle Royale/ Soccer) Blue Lock like Ao Ashi but is great for a different reason. Ao Ashi had great characters and storytelling. Meanwhile Blue Lock is great entertainment and animation. But still it is still able to craft a soccer story that is interesting on how a group of strikers can actually work as a team. Still this really is a battle royale anime.
  • (Action/ SoL) MHA had a strong showing after having an extremely mediocre S5. Great animation and actually builded off the things S5 did setup. Now the big concern is will the anime continue this success or are we heading back to S4+S5 quality.
  • (Isekai/Comedy) Shadow in Eminence is a better and different flavor of Overlord. It is a great weekly anime because this show is pure entertainment. Cid despite being hella OP is hella entertaining unlike Ainz from Overlord. Also the show is starting to get into the lore, which is interesting but the main draw of the show is the comedy from being a parody.
  • (Comedy/Romance)The Remake of Urusei Yatsura is a nice old school comedy to watch. Nothing deep but considering how most rom-coms are nowadays watching this is extremely refreshing.
  • (Isekai/Comedy) Iruma-kun S3 is more of the same for this show. It is very consistent and fun, but I can only say its just good. More so it doesn't take too many risks but you know what you are getting with this show.
  • (SoL) Do It Yourself is a very safe CGDCT's show. It is basically what you expect our of the genre nothing more nothing less. It isn't a comedy or drama so it really doesn't do much outside of being a cute show.
  • (Romance/Comedy)Romantic Killer for the most part as a comedy is kind of mediocre. But towards the end of the show it starts to take itself more seriously and there is a big quality jump. Still it is hard to recommend since it is really only the last 3 or so episodes where the show becomes really good.
  • (Ecchi/Harem/Romance/Drama) Love Flops looks like the next ecchi harem rom-com. And initally that is what it seems like. Tho it uses that to create a twist is shockingly good. Honestly eps 7 -> 11 are all great. But beyond that the show is very consistent. Again hard to recommend a show that takes this long to get good.
  • (Comedy) The Littles Lies We Tell, This show is either hilarious or stale. Premise is you have 4 middle school girls with a secret. One is an Alien Commander, One is an Assassin, One is a Telepath and the final is actually a guy. Some of the jokes are amazing. However unlike SxF and Bocchi the jokes are more inconsistent. Fun seasonal I would say tho.
  • (SoL) Novice Alechemist is very bland I would say. Despite being an anime that should be lead by its anime it doesn't dive too deep in these parts. Still if you are a fan of the Atelier Games you might enjoy this. Tho it is low budget.
  • (Ecchi/Romance/Comedy) More then a Married Couple, Less then Lovers is what is so annoying with modern rom-coms. Very little progress as the author continues to blue ball you and a clueless MC who somehow forgot everything that he experienced in all the previous episodes. Still it has some great wholesome moments, but this is a frustrating show to watch.
  • (Drama) Raven of the Inner Palace is a show you can tell that the source material is very good. But the pacing to fully adapt that ruins it since events happen so fast you lose the desire to care for the cast.
  • (Action) Shinobi no Ittoki is the definition of mid. Mid action, mid characters and god awful writing. Best to avoid.
  • (Drama) Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer - AVOID THIS ANIME THE ADAPTATION IS LITERAL GARBAGE. EITHER READ THE MANGA OR DONT BOTHER WITH THE SERIES.

imo the best parts of the chainsaw man have *nothing* to do with the gun devil or makima lol...

and tbh - its the most filler-like arc in the entire run.

all of csm got the energy and depth of an early 2000s jason statham movie before dude realized he was actually a comedian.
Yup, it's 90% substance but there's that 10% of little moments here and there that make it special. I do wonder if part 2 of the manga is able to keep the same energy though.

Finally caught all the finales I missed a week ago due to moving and not having internet for almost 2 weeks.

1. Shinobi finale was too good for such a mid ass show. These nikkas literally saved all the best shyt for the last episode and gave us ninja meetings and discussions for like 65% of entire series. These nikkas wrapped up everything the last episode and gave us some decent action like they couldn't do that half a series ago. Definitely was a chore to get through, but not as bad as Sonny Boy. That takes the cake for disappointment.

2. Maid War was the surprise gem. Only other anime I laughed this much was Prison school. Its easily a funnier anime than that Uncle from another world shyt. Plus the action and violence was well down. Show was powerfully sad, but I enjoyed every episode. Manager steals every scene she is in, even when she doesn't say anything.

3. Chainsaw Man ended dope. Overall the show was good, but I never felt myself anticipating it like Tokyo Revengers or Reincarnated as a Sword, etc...

4. Spy Family finale was fire. Mad intense.
