I would definitely put NYC on the list too but that COL The DMV can be pricey too but that depends on where in DC you are or how close to either DC or a Metro station you plan on living in tho.

You could also look into the Baltimore area too. Bmore itself, despite its reputation, is a decent city for Black ppl but if you wanna be around a more professional/“Buppie” crowd, you can look into Bmore’s suburbs for them, most especially Howard County and Baltimore County.

Oakland, CA seems like a good place for Black ppl too. Even parts of LA too like Leimert Park and Baldwin Hills for example.

Chicago is another candidate.

Btw OP, what are you into hobby-wise/free time-wise? And what kinda job/career/side hustle you’re looking to get into? Also, where are you originally coming from?

As a DMV resident, the prices aren't too bad if you stay outside of the city proper. Silver Spring in particular is pretty solid; close to a metro station and has plenty to do in the area in its own right.

I've lived in Philly and Chicago and I have to disagree. If you don't have children, and aren't concerned about school quality, and have a decent paying job, then yes Chicago and Philly can potentially be "okay" cities to settle down in.

But Chicago is not the city it used to be. It used to be on the list of best cities for blacks to live, back in the early 2000's and late 90's. It stopped being on that list awhile ago. The unemployment rate is pretty high for blacks in chicago, the COL is okay--but it depends on where you live. The areas with the best school districts can get pricey. And those are also the parts where there is a lot of racism. It's a very segregated city. I live in Chicago for almost ten years and I recently went back in November, and yeah the vibe and atmosphere there even feels different. On average, blacks aren't doing that well in the midwest, and Illinois like most of midwest has a reputation for being racist.

With Philly, I'm sorry but the COL is around the same as Chicago COL, with it depending on where you live. If you don't care about bad schools, then it can be reasonable as far as COL goes. But if you have a family or eventually want a family, a lot of people in Philly move to the whiter districts, which are expensive. And a lot of people also send their kids to private schools, because the public schools in Philly suck overall. From my experience in Philly, blacks aren't doing that well--sorry to say it, but yes, on average, most are just doing "okay". Philly tends to pay less than even Chicago for some of the same jobs, but it has the same COL as Chicago, which means the COL there is not really on par with salary, for a lot of jobs. The taxes in the city of Philly are ridiculous too. Also as a sidenote, Philly is an ugly city. I hated every year I lived there and I'm so glad I moved. Chicago was beautiful though.

I'm now in Charlotte and I have to say that overall, everything here is good, the pay, the col, the people, etc. I would never go back to Philly or Chicago after being here, and would never recommend either one of those places either.
