Damn do they have their certs if you don't know how to program and keep up with the languages or you aren't willing to move you may fall behind

Most programmers do not have any Certs, certs are for the more traditional roles of IT ( System admin, network engineers , Desktop support ) etc.

Whats the better option if that's the field he enjoys? Should he be stuck in a dead end job just to avoid being 75K in debt? The "What happens if you lose your job" shouldn't matter because what if you get hit by a bus tomorrow?

Being stuck in 75K debt is alot better than being stuck in a dead end job you hate .Reading your post is basically saying "Why waste your time".
and doctors have 200k worth of debt. I guess people shouldn't become doctors now :troll:

Right, I understand the whole college leaving you with debt. I do. But I also know the pain of working shytty ass jobs that go nowhere( warehouse jobs and retail jobs, good luck making over $15/hr ). I did various warehouse jobs for close to 6 years, the highest I ever made was $12.75/hr. People have to understand school really is an investment. One of my friends graduated from U.MD with a degree in Mechanical engineering, had a hard time finding a job at first. After about 2 years he finally landed a job with the government in his field. 2 years of working a job he didn't like w/debt vs working a job he didn't like for the rest of his life. hmmmmmmmmmm

physics in general aint that bad and honestly is the backbone of all engineers because its the first real jump into problem solving, biggest thing with nuclear are the various controls in place to keep the thing from overheating. They use ridiculous amounts of water and lead to shield the core units. Id say the biggest reason it pays is because of the hazard involved. I have a friend who works at one for southern company

Have you had an internship yet?

i did a co-op over the course of 3 semesters, definitely worth it

thank you, honestly @duckbutta it just sounds like the grind and the process has left you jaded to it but you gotta change your perspective. Learn some new languages like Python and start networking. Headhunters will pluck you up if it looks like you can do the job

the key is learning how to sell what you know. Cause there are plenty of chem e's that i know personally that are smart as hell but cant sell themselves worth a shyt so it basically is a moot point. A guy had a 3.8 and got sent home (fired) from Eastman Chemical(decent sized group) because he didnt speak up with his work. You gotta sell yourself cause noone else is going to in a work environment

I'd urge all you STEM students to work for 4-5 years and then get an MBA. You should be able to do well on the GMAT based on your background which should get you into a top 30 program. You can easily bump your salary by 25-35K easy in a couple of years if you play your cards right.

I got an EE degree, with 30 k debt. I know work for the Govt which is paying for my MBA (its not a TOP 30 but its free and form a decent school so fukk it)

The work is...not as hard as school to say the least. I work with weapon systems and I did programing (as a govt contractor) before that.

My current job is pretty cake tho, its like all my engineering labs from class except slower.

Due for my first raise in Oct, which marks my first year here :obama:
