DX11 cards been out for almost 4 years, PS3 and Xbox 360 are DX9, how exactly are PC's not being held back when Crysis 3 is the first game I can think of that requires a Dx11 card. The new engines being developed for the next gen consoles will be DX11 compatible. Negro, there are people in this thread expecting CG level graphics, that is why I say don't expect that big of a jump. Dudes expecting to fire up their PS4/720 and see Puss in Boots staring them in the face.

I'm glad you mentioned Crysis, didn't they make there games so they could work with old and new tech? (They did) Its called the Cry3engine that uses DirectX11 like you stated. Cry3engine does that
So does the newest Unreal engine. So does the engine that Battlefied 3 uses

500 of the fastest supercomputers in the world COMBINED for 58.9 petaflops, yet in 12 years you think 5 petaflops will be possible for a $400 home console. The 360 was 355 GFLOPS, the 720 is rumored to be around 1.5 TFLOPS, there is an 8 year gap between the hardware release dates and in theory the 720 is only 4-5 times more powerful in raw computing, yet you seem to think in 12 years we're going to see consoles around 4000-5000 times more powerful

I don't think its a stretch to suggest that in 12 years we can do the same. 2025 is a long way away. If we went from the first teraflop supercomputer to teraflop console in 16 years. Why is the first petaflop supersomputer to petaflop console in a similar period of time impossible?

DARPA plans to have a exaflop supercomputer done by 2018. To do that will require being able to put petaflops on individual chips. I don't think its stretch to say that the tech will be available in an affordable fashion by 2025.

Oh and Ray Kurzweil agrees with me on this front. Look at the charts in his book that have been right so far. He predicts that by the early-2020s, the average $1,000 laptop should be doing petaflops. That means that by 2025, the graphics cards should be cheap enough to be sold in a $400 console.

thats how exponentials works breh....its look like nothing is happening for a long time.....then BOOM outta nowhere epic leaps are made

this fact still remains true......in 97 the worlds fastest supercomputer was doing just 1 teraflop.......by 2013 a $400 console is doing 1 teraflop.......I don't think its a stretch to say that we can do that again in the next 10-15 years

1000x increase in computation from 97-2013......not crazy to say we can do another 1000 from 2013-2025......Ray Kurzweil and other experts in the field who have been right about the rate of increase in computation seem to believe so.

4K ain't gonna be the standard for a long, long time. If ever. Hell, 1080p ain't even the standard for consoles yet. There is still people that don't even know what a Blu-Ray is.

And developers are asking for specific improvements. Like more RAM. Small shyt like that. You could give them the most powerful console from 10 years in the future and they'd still have the same size budget as they did last gen, and probably drop a 5 hour game that costs $60.
