thing is i wasnt a GRODT fan at the time so it didnt "age terribly"

compared to the mixtapes Fif was putting out the album couldnt compete

i look at it like this, if i liked it then i like it now. i dont care how old the beats are. they dont get terrible all of a sudden because of technological advances, thats crazy.

Some shyt has a nostalgia feel also

And that doesn't mean it's a classic just becuz everytime you hear it you think of that summer back in 1994

Couple things.

I always thought future generations decide on "classic" status.

This usually highlights important pieces of art which have been missed in real time. Hip-Hop reanimated catalogues of forgotten musicians, across multiple genres and turned them into classic artists.

Using that metric, if something didn't age well, its simply not a classic. Does that make it less of a personal favourite, of course not.

Forcing classic status on something usually breaks it.

mmlp1/grodt sounds dated, illmatic sounds fresh and timeless

MMLP and GRODT are examples of albums that didn't age well. I never liked GRODT all that much from the jump, but that's whatever. Illmatic, as classic as it is, is definitely dated though.

I think alot of times its more the listener than anything else. Its albums that were the soundtrack to my youth that I would instantly trash today. Or songs I couldn't stand back in the day are making their way into my regular rotation

Some of those old sampled joints sound even more rich and refreshing than those new trap shyts.
Most Trap shyts today won't be played in 2040 but some of the boombap and soulful stuff will i think.

I still think genres like Soul and Funk have aged better than most Hip-Hop in general.
