This is is like asking what happen to Disco music in the 90s

they went out of style.

you still have some tho. The blackish universe, family reunion on Netflix, the last og

think OP meant to ask this question in 2009.....:francis:

10 years ago I would have (correctly) guessed that the 2 and a Half Men style sitcoms would die out in favor of ones like Modern Family

Sitcoms used to be prestige TV. But it's been a wrap ever since dramas and reality shows took over. :wow:

Remember how there used to be a mandatory very special episode for every sitcom? Even sitcoms that had no business having one (Wayans Bros) had one. They knew everybody was going to be watching. Imagine if a show like Modern Family had one. The audience would be like :scust: because there's no topic a sitcom could do better than a drama in 2020.

@stomachlines, you ever seen Mom or The Goldbergs? Those are both really good sitcoms.

I've seen the commercials for those shows but never watched them

Mom is the show with the mom and the daughter and both of them are in rehab or some shyt, right?

And The Goldbergs is like a throwback show to the 80's, right?

What I think TV could use right now is a straightfoward crime drama that doesn't delve too far into fantasy or soap opera territory.

Perhaps it does exist but I just don't know about it

I think Cable TV mainly HBO happened to them.

Chuckle for 30 Mins at a time, or watch an hr long drama dealing with Prison, The Mafia, murder, death, sex, etc....

(With Nudity, violence, and more adult language)

With a storyline that continued from episode to episode???

Easy choice really.

:jbhmm: something went wrong....traditionally stand up comedians use to make great sitcoms (Martin, Seinfeld, Bill Cosby etc etc)...that formula seems to be gone now, thereby leaving us with shytty sitcoms

Yeah. They're on TV all the time so there's always a channel to check them out. Mom was created by Chuck Lorre (the guy behind Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory), but this show is more realistic than the other ones he's made. The characters are taken more seriously, it has continuity and story arcs, and everybody develop over time. It's like a modern-day Golden Girls. :ehh:

The Goldbergs is set in the 80s and it's almost like a parody of 80s sitcoms, but at the same time, it plays everything straight. A lot of the episodes are based off events in the creator's childhood, and almost every character is based off someone the creator actually knew, like his family, his friends, his teachers, even friends of his family. The characters learn lessons every episode, but they have a lot of self-awareness and know how ridiculous certain things are. It's like a live-action cartoon. :wow:

Oh ok

Are new episodes of both these shows still coming on?

No it's not the same as asking about what happened to Disco in the 90's

In the 90's, nobody was asking what happened to Disco

Not even a fair comparison

Not at all

Nope

No one is asking what happened to sitcoms

so yes it is the same thing
