Labels recoup those expenses from your portion of sales/revenue

You could go double even triple plat and still owe the label money
I took 6, so that's 6M/3 albums = 2m per album (though it raises next album if the previous was successful). I have a day one/in-house producer or team of them, so I'm not blowing through the advance trying to get on fire established beat makers. I believe artists have a floor or minimum they have to spend (?) So let's say I spend 800k of my 2 million advance.

My album drops and I sell 500k, legit Gold sold, w/o the stream equivalents. Albums are what, $12 a pop? That's $6 million. How am I in debt? I'm $4M over my advance with $1.2m I didn't spend.

I'm learning so is there funky shyt that'll go on with that $4m plus $1.2m?

You get your advance of say $800k to record your album...the other $1.2 million they keep for
  • Mixing and Mastering
  • Marketing promo to radio/TV/magazines
  • Sample clearances
  • Legal on collaborations
  • Video production
  • Packaging and shipping your album

The label doesn't get $ 6 million.. they get $ 3 million due to selling wholesale to distributors
or in Apples case $ 4.2 million

Now you are probably thinking oh it's all good :blessed:

Hold up n!gga....:pachaha:

They still loaned you $2 million and expect repayment from your portion of the proceeds :feedme:

So if your cut is 50 cents -$1 a CD and you sell 500k, your cut = 250k- 500k

You still owe the label 1.5 - 1.75 million ...so they'll grab a cut of your tour revenue/publishing to recoup :takedat:

but you need to tour and guess who lends you that money for support ? :sas1:

You guessed it......

say you were a popping artist and were blowing and got offered label deals, which are you taking ?

1. $1 Million record deal with Shady/Aftermath

2. $2 Million, 5 Album deal with Cash Money. it allows you to have all your publishing and you get paid 25 % of all your music sales.

3. $1 Million deal with Epic Records

4. $ 2 Million deal with OVO Sound. (you might have to live in a tent)

5. a 1 album deal, where you get 100 % creative control, and receive ownership of master recordings. the label is XL Recordings (Adele's label)

6. $6 Million deal for three albums, allow you to own a record label imprint that gets you 40 % ownership of imprint, and a biopic. the label is interscope

7. 7 album 360 deal with FilmOnDotCom

8. $50K deal with B$B Records. if you don't sign then Lito and Troy Ave will diss you.

9. a blunt and a pint of lean if you sign with Glo Gang
5 and it's not even a question

we talking about record for record, the highest selling female artist of all time... nobody's first two albums have sold more

then i'd be her first rap artist... so you know white world population going to at least buy up my first record... and it's getting hella spins on every type of station... why?? cause that lead single with adele on the hook and her in the video

then it's ONE fukking album... so sell 10 milly or flop.. there will be no shelf because i'm going... WITH all my pub and my masters

shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit... you not sticking me with any label known to drop/shelf/cheat nikkas.. and that's basically everyone named but hers

and any of those deal where you get money up front, better believe they want to make that money back or welcome to never seeing another release date.... ever

Correct and with 6 you're guaranteed to 6 million to only release 3 albums, your own imprint, and you own 40% of your masters. You can always purchase the other 60%
imprint means you are still under interscope... underperform on that first album after they gave you 6 milly and see what jimmy iovine LETS you do after that

same nikka that was dropping rakim off dre's imprint label and had dre telling artists "it's not me, its jimmy.. if you don't come out selling a milly, he's dropping you off top"

So what are the artists that are netting over a mill and in the black doing? Smaller than standard advances? Are their singles putting in the work at $1.29 a piece? Radio?

Also what does an imprint do for an artist? When an artist announces his imprint/sub-label it's celebrated.

you'd have to check their bank account... cause most of them lying first off

you the ones with the most money, usually came in the game with a name... so they got a better deal than the standard

you'll also notice they tour A LOT... they have a lot of endorsements... do a lot of features.. have outside investments... etc etc etc

making money purely off record sales is basically impossible.. which is why there are 360 deals... labels used to only take music money.. that was cool when everyone was selling.. now they aren't selling, labels said nah brehs... we gonna need to dip into your other money too... which used to be 100% of the artists

I know the ones with a name get a better deal so when OP said "you're blowing up and buzzing" I figured that was enough to assume your name is getting big.

I'd definitely have outside investments, I wouldn't be a 30 feature a year cat but some. And doesn't more touring = more money lent for extensive touring?

depends on your touring... are you doing stadiums with expensive backdrops and helicopters coming down from the ceiling and kanye style light shows

or are you doing like the roots... just you and the band and a mic

same goes for an album... are you paying 150k a beat with 20 songs and 30 features

or you producing yourself with no one on it like j. cole?
