There aren't very many solid gen-z comedians right now, people mostly watch skits (Desi Banks, Druski, Lou Ratchett)

Doesn't make sense honing your craft on stage when you can make 3x the money posting videos.

I'm gen z by one year and almost all the comedians I watch are older than me (25) same with my younger brother, gen z comedians are too self-aware on stage in my opinion.
When the algorithm changes up and the revenue is the same. It’s best to also have a stage show to fall back on.

Yeah I feel like a lot of Gen Z doesn’t find standup funny.
Because they take everything literally and find ways to be offended by every fukking joke. Stand up has been regulated to sex/dating mishaps, kids stories that don’t include hitting or cussing at them, self deprecation while revealing a true social anxiety or depressive disorder, and bathroom/bodily function humor….shyts weak.

old head millennial here…I still love standup tho, it’s no where near its peak, but I have a broad sense of humor so I can fire up anyone of any walk of life whose good at the craft and laugh my ass off

All the arts are suffering from younger practitioners having direct access to wide audience. most comedians didn’t used to really get on until their 30’s, now, like music, people can put content out directly to millions of people without ever actually having mastered their craft. That’s cool and all, but it’s also why careers are so short these days, sure attention has gotten divided, but people also don’t have the skill, versatility to tenacity to go the distance

Do they need to? Art has changed, if you're smart with your money, why not retire at 35 instead of vying for Netflix specials at 50?
Because most of them aren’t making retire at 35 money. For every Melvin Gregg who really makes it you got 2000 with a cute number of hits who aint making fukk it money but could make a long term career out of what they do if they actually honed their craft, but I ain’t gon hold you, yall the generation who all think you’re going to be successful SM influencers and YouTubers even tho the ceiling for success in that arena has gotten higher

Same goes for old comedians as well but instead of skits it's podcasts.

Doesn't make sense to hone your craft when you can churn out podcasts about how hard it is to hone your craft and talk endlessly about importance of comedy.

And then you put on a special from one of these 'legends' who constantly preach about importance of comedy and you see them humping a stool, taking their shirt off or telling a joke that was funnier in a tweet you read 3 months ago.

Podcasting killed stand up comedy :hubie:

Yeah it’s crazy to me. they laugh more from internet memes than standup jokes

I like memes too but standup is the ultimate form of comedy for me.
