Cons too much attention, dealing with hoodrats who love dreads, dealing with fake hippy girls who really hoodrats who love dreads. White ppl thinking you play football ....................

I'm 6'2 with dreads that are dripping so it might be different for you.

Currently been growing my locs for 3 years now. I get a lot of compliments about them from others. The gyal dem love it, they look unique and they’re downright beautiful (especially on girls).
I just don’t like not being able to wash my hair as regularly as before and after a while they/mine are starting to smell a bit so have to put some olive oil moose just to elevate the smell.

Cons
-first year of locs is depressing when they are short and frizzly as hell with no hang time family, girls, and people giving looks saying bad comments, telling you it doesn't look good you'll want to cut or restart them don't
-maintenance can be long/annoying if you have more locs 100+
-slight discrimination/initial distrust in workplace/police/other institutions etc.
-select women find it a complete turnoff even if you maintain it nice.
-women wanting to grab you hair during sex.
-Can be annoying going underwater at the beach/pool or grilling food for cookouts and your hair gets wet or smells stay in.
-Head can get hot during summer and youll sweat more.
-Retwists can add up in price if you don't know someone or do it yourself $60+
-Everyones hair and locs are different so theres no way to tell what they are going to look like.
-Hairline can get fukked up if you retwist too much or style them too tight
-People assume you smoke weed.
-Natural vs maintained beef
-Thin twisted locs can break more easily don't make your locs too small
-In areas like chicago, DMV, ATL, Florida every other dude has locs and its not as special/unique there.

Pros
-Black women LOVE it, some women will throw themselves at you
-Unique hairstyle that adds a one of a kind dimension to your personality and outfits
-Maintenance low (cover your hair at night and retwist once every month or two.)
-Save money from barbers
-So many different ways to style it
-Learn a lot about your hair in the journey
-As your hair grows your locs look different the first years are really fun to see how it grows and changes
-I never need to wear hats in the winter
-Questions people ask
-Perfect protective natural style for black people due to our curly hair
-Can easily maintain a professional appearance once they have some length and are maintained
-I could almost swear they make you stronger in the weight room and add some speed lol.
-You'll more quickly identify find people who don't like black people.
-Timeless style I don't think it will ever go out of style like fads like afros, jerry curls etc

My recommendations
-Find a steady girl and steady job when you first get locked because that first stage is rough
-Learn to retwist or find a girl to retwist it for you for free
-Don't use beeswax after the starter stage
-Be careful of which products you use and learn which ones work with your hair will
-With the parting go smaller because if you want larger locs you can combine them but with larger locs your stuck.
-know whether you'll want square or diamond parting and pencil, sharpie, marker sized dreads
-Resist the temptation to cut your hair or start over in the beginning

I've been growing mine for a while but i'm looking for a new job. Women in my family pressuring my to cut them cause it would be easier move up in the corporate world. I got my c.s degree and my job aint trippin. I think i will be fine cause i'm in in the i.t. field.
wwyd? I dont wanna cut this shyt. The way i feel if a job wont hire me cause my hair, I don't want to work there

The corprate world hard on dreads
Im bald now but I had dreads back in the early 2000s and I worked in the Governor's office at the time. I kept my dreads out of my face and pulled back in a conservative look. Never had a problem at work. Only got negativity from old black people.

Yo please don't retwist your hair everyday. That is how you end up bald. If you don't like naps locs aren't for you.

This. I finally got my locks twisted in 2016 and maybe 5 times since then. Last time before that was in '98.

I've had my locks since '96. Never cut them and I'm convinced the reason I still have my OG hairline and full locks with strength is because I didn't twist them. Excessive twisting thins your hair out and makes breakage easier.

At this point since my hair is so much a part of my identity and life I can't point to too many if any cons, other than what somebody mentioned about the time ot takes to dry. I get my hair shampooed professionally and it takes up to 3hrs sometimes under a dryer.

Oh, and avoid beeswax like the plague! I tried that shyt when I first tried growing mine. :hhh:

Not a good look and it makes your hair dirty as fukk.

Lot of good pros/cons here.
I like to bbq a lot, smoke meats(:dame:) almost every weekend and grill sometimes weeknights. Depending on my wash/retwist schedule, I'll postpone cause the smoke smell will get trapped in the locs. After a fresh retwist can't do no ribs or bbq :upsetfavre:

I’ve had mine for over 2 years.

Pros: Low Maintenece, Easy growth, Healthy, Convenient, Easy to style.

Cons: If you get to point of where you don’t want locs anymore you have to cut them off to start hair growth all over again. I’ve heard of instances where people were actually able to detangle them, but it seems too much of a hassle.
