Cons
-first year of locs is depressing when they are short and frizzly as hell with no hang time family, girls, and people giving looks saying bad comments, telling you it doesn't look good you'll want to cut or restart them don't
-maintenance can be long/annoying if you have more locs 100+
-slight discrimination/initial distrust in workplace/police/other institutions etc.
-select women find it a complete turnoff even if you maintain it nice.
-women wanting to grab you hair during sex.
-Can be annoying going underwater at the beach/pool or grilling food for cookouts and your hair gets wet or smells stay in.
-Head can get hot during summer and youll sweat more.
-Retwists can add up in price if you don't know someone or do it yourself $60+
-Everyones hair and locs are different so theres no way to tell what they are going to look like.
-Hairline can get fukked up if you retwist too much or style them too tight
-People assume you smoke weed.
-Natural vs maintained beef
-Thin twisted locs can break more easily don't make your locs too small
-In areas like chicago, DMV, ATL, Florida every other dude has locs and its not as special/unique there.
Pros
-Black women LOVE it, some women will throw themselves at you
-Unique hairstyle that adds a one of a kind dimension to your personality and outfits
-Maintenance low (cover your hair at night and retwist once every month or two.)
-Save money from barbers
-So many different ways to style it
-Learn a lot about your hair in the journey
-As your hair grows your locs look different the first years are really fun to see how it grows and changes
-I never need to wear hats in the winter
-Questions people ask
-Perfect protective natural style for black people due to our curly hair
-Can easily maintain a professional appearance once they have some length and are maintained
-I could almost swear they make you stronger in the weight room and add some speed lol.
-You'll more quickly identify find people who don't like black people.
-Timeless style I don't think it will ever go out of style like fads like afros, jerry curls etc
My recommendations
-Find a steady girl and steady job when you first get locked because that first stage is rough
-Learn to retwist or find a girl to retwist it for you for free
-Don't use beeswax after the starter stage
-Be careful of which products you use and learn which ones work with your hair will
-With the parting go smaller because if you want larger locs you can combine them but with larger locs your stuck.
-know whether you'll want square or diamond parting and pencil, sharpie, marker sized dreads
-Resist the temptation to cut your hair or start over in the beginning
