What was the biggest reason for the drop off sales wise between Diddy’s 1st and 2nd albums?

Diddy’s debut album no way out did 561,000 the first week and had the first rap song in history to debut at number 1 on the billboard hot 100 with “I’ll Be missing you”. It was certified 4x platinum by the end of 97 and ended up going 7x platinum overall. It had other top 5 hits like Benjamin’s, Can’t nobody hold us down, and been around the world.

2 years later he dropped the follow up forever and it did half the sales the first week an only was certified 1 times platinum.

What happened? :patrice:

"Can't Nobody Hold Me Down" was a #1
"I'll be Missing You" was a #1
"Been Around The World" was a #2

"All About the Benjamins" and "Victory" weren't mainstream hits but they were 2 of the tracks that featured BIG heavily, in a time where consumers were obsessed with him (esp after his death).

Missing You was also put out without getting clearance for a very very catchy sample, and profiting from a superstar's demise. It was quick, fast opportunism at its finest.

Between that first album and the second album he oversaturated the market with his face and personality. Mostly because people wanted it, in all honesty. He had that song for Godzilla that kind of fizzled out his 90's popularity.

His second album didn't have any hits aside from the R Kelly song. Mix of "been there heard that" with him and people wanting him to grow/change. At least he showed the ability to do that with what he would become in the 2000's and beyond.

Where I shouldn't be
He shoulda done a Mase collab album, but he left. The era changed completely under his feet so going hard wit how rich he was in comparison to everybody else was his only avenue.
The label formats used to be hip-hop one year RnB the next and it's sad cos Carl Thomas, Faith and Total's albums were all solid. So he just let the Hitmen shine on Pun, Kim and lotta other people's albums.
