Anyone upset by my statement is probably ignoring the context in which it was made.

It's not that he was too rich to be black or spoke too many languages, it's that he simply is not representative enough to demand a whole race of people to like him. If Kobe had grown up in poverty in West Texas carrying on the family business of making horse saddles for $4/hour, I would find it equally preposterous that all black people would be expected to like him or face racial slurs.

1. In international competition, everyone knows that #10 is the jersey for the team leader. Donovan wears it, Rooney wears it, Messi wears it, etc. Kobe is the team leader of USA basketball, so he should wear the #10. Maybe Bron or Carmelo wears it in Brazil in 206.
