You can say that about almost any rapper. Does he not have more conscious songs than unconscious? And you cherry picked his least conscious album to fit your agenda. Why didn't you name Gods Son,untitled(******),the lost tapes, hip hop is dead, life is good, distant relatives, streets disciple. All projects since Nastradamus. Name one of those albums that arent conscious.
No agenda here sir. Just not going to pretend like Nas is a conscious mc same shyt with 2pac. You might have a case for someone like Common though.

....
what mainstream are you watching?

mainstream hip-hop basically consists of bama rappers and weirdo industry plants.

"gangsta rap" died with death row. now if its street rappers youre talking about. its mostly just meek millz & fly-by-night bamas.
To non rap fans they are all gangsta rappers

As much as it pains me to say it, J Cole is bringing back acceptance to conscious music in the mainstream. of course, he stole Blu whole steez but thats another story.
My boy @Yoda can break it down better.
Yea...but I wonder is he really cool enough to do it...I honestly have my doubts.

Nas is a paradox as his career continued. I'd call him more of a introspective MC if we're going to pigeon hole him. I see concious i think De La Arrested Development, Tribe, Mos Def those cats (fukk mos def)

rawkus was alright but they were never considered cool.

plus they were the main flag-bearers of pretentious whiney rap.

kendrick is dikkridden by internet dweebs & white boys.

same with j.cole, who people keep mentioning in this thread..

bone thugs-n-harmony?
wutang clan?
nasty nas?
jimmy jones?
no limit soldiers?
etc etc

90% of conscious rappers are some struggle nikkas, extra corny and ain't about shyt

ain't nobody tryin to hear the teacher's pet rap

ol' 35 years old still livin in they moms basement smoking weed all day and rapping about how the world is fukked up ass nikkas

ol' hipster ass read two books and thinking they're Albert Einstein ass nikkas

Keep supporting the prison complex where they program black folk in degenerative behavior. :sas2:

All that gangsta shyt were promoted by the same people who own the prisons.

But no one likes getting schooled on black history, so I let yall cook on the poison.

It seems like you have to make turn up or trap music these days in order to not be called "fake deep" or something along those lines.

When bravado, materialism, and catchy analogies that don't mean shyt over a banging beat infiltrated the genre replacing social commentary. Some blame Southern Crunk however I point to Big Daddy Kane in 1988. Half Steppin is still one of my favorite old school tracks.

who cares about that chit?

at the end of the day, people want to be entertained. conscious rap still flourished and co-existed with "gangsta rap" throughout all of that up until it stopped being entertaining, and eventually conscious rap just became a selling gimmick for anything that wasnt street.

if you enjoy feeling self-righteous by forcing yourself to like sub-par music, then thats your perrogatve.

It never was all the way cool. You have to remember, HipHop started as party music.

You are wrong Hip Hop started with a message...little Jewish boys from New York didn't have any message to give...so they just talked about partying. THEY WERE NEVER ALL THE WAY COOL...:camby:

it became un-cool when it became synonymous with backpackers & incent-burners.

and then when kanye came thru and was given the conscious tag(even tho he doesnt rap about chit the vast majority of the time), it became a bunch of weirdos standing on a soap-box, mainly whining about how corny their lives are. so now its been dilluted to "every man" rappers being given the conscious tag even tho most of them really arent conscious.

conscious rap became uncool when dudes stopped jammin.
