When did you become aware of "race"

some of these stories, mine was more mild i guess, didnt notice race at all in elementary school had black friends, Spanish friends, Indian friends. My first high school a private one, freshman- sophomore year i was there , was about 99% black only non blacks was 2 puerto ricans, 2 white girls and myself , even them was not weird

all changed once i went to a public school , shyt was segregated like prison , no joke at all , in class yea u joked or spoke with ppl of other races but during lunch it was a black section, a puerto rican section, a dominican section and a south american section, and thats who stuck with , if u ever went to chill with any of the other ppl , especially the blacks u

same went for when the multiple race wars broke out u had to ride for your group or suffer the consequences

the kids i work with now in elementary school are all uber aware of race , in a bad way,

other day during a lesson i asked the kid if they could go back in any period of time and change something what would they change ( this was after teaching them about civil rights ) i had this Guatemalan kid ( who almost looks white) say

"i would go back to when whites and blacks were separated"

had a black kid tell this girl she was very pretty and he would like her # or fb , the girl smiles say "thank you but sorry hun u look like monkey"

have had a bunch of Spanish kids drop the N word in the bad way

I went to HS in Texas. By the time I went back to MI I hated Mexicans.. I had no opinion of white people. My first roommate in college was Mexican.. I tried to give him a chance.. and guess what- him n his bytch were talking some racist shyt in Spanish (they didn't know I spoke it). I was only slightly racist... but like you said some mixed schools are like prison.. and I went str8 prison mode on him -- aka flash back to a time, when if you were white and u tried to date a black girl :ufukkedup:
If you were black n attempted to fukk a mexican chick and she told her people you would end up ... stomped out.. pulling all the other black dudes into a fight over the shyt. Luckily like 7 mexicans were shot up one day and the police were in the paper talking about how the crime scene was bloody and people came in and calmed shyt down.

Side note, coming from that school, I secretly thought southeast Asians were the hardest ethnic group on the planet, especially FOBs. I saw them stand up to whoever, whenever. The practiced no snitching wayyy better than blacks, and they didn't really have too many sellouts. I respected that shyt cuz their numbers were low.

Pricans, dominicans, and those were grouped in with the black people. Even some of the white looking ones. You couldn't afford to be a self hater in that type of environment.

I grew up in San Francisco. In SF, you don't even see black folks unless you go to the hood. Hella people don't even know SF has ghetto areas just like any big city in America because SF is one of the number one tourist cities on the planet Earth, so the other side of things isn't publicized in the mainstream media.

My old neighborhood was majority-black. But as soon as you left the hood, you didn't see black people anymore. My mother busted her a$$ to send me to Catholic school for my elementary school years. There was only a few black kids in my entire school. I am biracial. My moms is Asian, but I did not feel like the other Asian kids and didn't really look like them either. But my Asian side of the family always showed love and it was no big deal in my family. The white kids at my school was hella rich and lived in nice neighborhoods on the other side of town. There were almost no whites in my old neighborhood. And my old hood was hella dangerous and violent during the late 80's and early 90's when gang banging and crack was at its peak. It wasn't even safe to walk down the street in Lakeview back then because of .

It fukked me up in the head at a young age living in a neighborhood the cops were afraid to even go to let alone taxi drivers and pizza delivery men. But Frisco is a complex place in terms of race. My old neighborhood was more diverse than the average hood. There were straight up Latino families, Asian families and even some white families living in the hood at the time. There were hella half-breeds of all kinds in the hood just like me. People of different races kicked it on the turf all the time although folks still tended to stick to their own people. I live on the East Coast now. The hood is like 100% black in DC, Baltimore and NYC. It ain't like that where I'm from.

First off BJJ is not a fakkit sport.. I wish my sons were interested in fighting. My oldest, is into science, he can't even throw a fukking football (discusting sh1t to watch) , he probably smarter than me and will probably be OK.... even though he's into white artist like Beiber and he speaks like a white boy (you all know what I mean). and I think the way lil white boys speak is gross.

And I've slipped up and said stop acting like a white boy, once to my oldest. so I feel you.. But you have to be a certain neutral type of person when you're around them. How you were raised and your experiences shape who you are and PREpare you for the world we live in. but their experiences will be different.

My sons are fukking oblivious. My first thought about races was "damn all white people are either teachers or on the news" I said that in the first grade - when I just turned 5.

All that bullshyt that 88m3 said he did is very unusual for minorities. I'm not a fan of any of that sh1t. Luckily I have BM's that think more outside the box than me. My sons go to interracial Christian church :gross!!: and one is raised by an atheist.

sometimes, things will make you uncomfortable but you have to let them be themselves. My dad used to tell me I was going to be a fakkit and not get any p*ssy because I wasn't varsity football from 9th grade like my bro n cousins. , lol.. I ended up being a pimp so you just never know how they will turn out, just give em love. Well... better yet, that's overrated. Just give them support.

When i was on like 3rd grade or some shyt i was at a friends house, and he nabbed Kentucky Fried Movie from his older brother. Basically its a sketch comedy movie on the SNL model, but rated R. Anyway, we were like 7 so the swearing and little bit of titties in it were enough to hook us in.

I don't really ever remember being unaware of race, so I'd imagine I was very young when I first began to grasp the concept. But I grew up in Detroit which is more than 80% black (and the schools I went to were 90%+ black) so maybe that's part of it. As a kid, outside of this one white family on my block (and a few teachers) I didn't really see white people that much except on TV. At the time it was actually the most segregated urban area in the country. I do remember wondering at one point why most white people lived in the suburbs though.

That isn't usual, imo. I can't really speak on it without sounding ignorant... so whatever.

And my people are from nubia.... from a now, confused part of Africa... can't say which nation, because two nations share the area now. Then we are from a plantation in Georgia, still have passed down stories, dairies n shyt. woman house slaves, who got ghettogagged... to be exact. I've always been aware of race but shyt I can't remember when it first happened. But I do remember the three biggest events of my life that reminded me that racism is real as hell.

Rodney King beating and acquittal of those pigs. The riots man...

The OJ Simpson Trial....The polar opposite reactions by white and black people...man that shyt was surreal.

Katrina.....It just seemed like a long drawn out drowning of people of color, but this time you could watch it on CNN. Painful shyt to watch.

i like the honesty in this thread. i feel like race discussions being taken over by pc liberals (white people/uncle toms with no experience w the working class) have actually made race relations worse. the op's saying he doesn't want his son playing white sports, this other dude's flat out saying he hated mexicans. this is actually good. its healthy to be able to express 'wrong' opinions from time to time

I went to a private school my entire life with mostly affluent white people...

I remember many instances from ages 6 to 13 where parents would say "OH HE IS SO ARTICULATE!"

I took that as a compliment, but my parents sat me down and explained to me why they were saying it...

For me it was a little the opposite and my family was bugging..
Since I was 5 I went to the Fresh Air Fund (summer camp where inner city kids go to stay with a white family in the burbs for 2 weeks, etc), I was accepted and treated like their own. Everything was good. But when I was home with my family when we would go on our family outings and sh!t, I always ended up playing wit ad eating with some white family. My aunt used to always get on me for that. But for me, I saw race but since i was treated fairly I didnt dwell on race. I mean I can roll up on that town and family at anytime and be treated better than I can in my own hood.
