before the Slaughterhouse album, dude was legit in my top five DOA. Actually, in my top 3.

Work Rate/Music output was excellent (first album+countless mixtape songs+ mood music series+ordinary love shyt)

Bars on top of bars on top of bars (but who would get outbarred by folks like Jay, Nas, Lupe, etc. but they don't have his work output and consistency)

incredibly consistent (only MC I can think of with more songs on such a high level is Styles P, who releases subpar ALBUM tracks despite his blistering level of mixtapes)

Incredibly diverse (does "backpack" sounding shyt, battle shyt, club shyt, flossy shyt, introspective shyt, storytelling shyt. other MCs do, as well. but not as consistent, often or on the same level)

Great pound for pound "battle" record (game, all of G-Unit, Hov, Prodigy, Ran, lost to Saigon) Only rappers with better battle/diss records are Pac (self explanatory),. Hov (subliminal disses plus "Takeover"), Nas (subliminal disses+all of StillMatic), Cam (Who doesn't give a shyt who you are) but their wins and losses were higher profile.

Only things, IMHO, that he was outclassed in were popularity (always called an "internet rapper") sales, "superman" status (Joey can be lame as fukk, which can be off putting to the grown kids who want all their rappers to be boring invincible villains) and influence.... all of which I care nothing about, but I understand why others do.

Unfortunately, I rate MCs by how they CURRENTLY rate to other MCs (you're not going to catch Kane and Rakim in my top 5 unless they drop a song TODAY with verses more entertaining that the last entertaining song by folks in my current).

So honestly, I don't know. :to:

Nas is the GOAT right now.

Running like a cheetah right now, unfolding scrolls and all, you repetitive motherfukker.

:deadrose:

Again Wayne.
Simply because he a better rapper
That a whole generation loves him and treats him as Goat in arguably the worst era of rap we've ever seen when there was no other credible competition is not that impressive

Regardless if me or you, or anyone, thinking this is a terrible era of rap he still is going to go down as a legend because of his influence and impact in this current era.

nah, really....

outside of the "he's popular and I'm a whore who like popular things and that's all" factor.....

In my opinion, it's like saying Jordan, Pippen, LeBron and Shaq are all tied for number one GOAT NBA player.

You bring up Wilt and Oscar Robinson based on stats and not popularity and money, dudes will put on dresses and tell you how stupid you are. Start talking irrelevant things like "Lookit his shoes, average competition, who they married, how many records they sold", etc etc.

But it's all opinion.

I definitely get what you're saying, I just don't agree that that's how we should rank artists. Most consider KRS a top 10 rapper ever. I happen to think he stinks. Am I obligated to put him in my top 10 because that's what the general consensus tells me to do, even though I feel differently?

As far as the mixtape vs. album thing, I actually think mixtapes allow for a much better product; or at least one closer to the artist's intentions, as they're not faced with the label applying pressure as far as making more accessible or commercial music to cater to a greater audience. They also don't have input as far as features, so someone like Wale isn't forced to put a bunch of R&B artists on his mixtape like he does his albums. Also, labels are hesitant to pay for sample clearances these days, so mixtapes allow for better production IMO.
I hear you. I just don't know that there's a better way to do it. There needs to be some standards. We don't want anyone thinking they can come in and say that Hammer is better than Ghostface and have their opinion count. And to your question - you wouldn't be obligated to put KRS in your top ten - but you would be obligated to admit Criminal Minded is a classic.

I agree with you on mixtapes - its appalling how sampling laws and corporate interests gutted hip-hop.

I thought we were comparing talent and body of work

Yea. This generation looks at Wayne as a top tier talent and even I can't deny that dude is a workhorse. He basically lived in the studio for like 3 years, on some 2Pac sh!t. And most of that work he put out in that time period was praised by this generation. Like I said, I'm far from a fan of his ( I was during the Carter 2 days) but he will go down as one of the GOATs.

He's a footnote in an inferior era.

Not a bad rapper. But that hasn't translated into good music at all. He literally hasn't made a single timeless song. His music is cheap and amateur sounding. His voice is wack, forced punchlines, try hard overegged emotional songs.

He's a nothing rapper.

Nah I feel he's the greatest I'm just laughing at your last sentences. To me, all the extra flashy shyt doesn't matter when you're talking greatest of all time so anyone bringing up Jay's business acumen in reference to him being the greatest is silly to me

In all honesty, after like Top 35, I don't even rank people anymore.

Those are usually just the cats that I dug a few tracks from or maybe an album, and left it at that. If I have to start ranking dudes into the 70's and shyt, you're probably not that much of a favorite. I dug a lot of Joe's music early on, but he's not one of my favorite MC's at all. I'll still mess with some of the old stuff though.

More than Budden.

Sigel was the second best MC, some think best, during Rocafella's heyday and has at least 2 albums that people consider near classic. He was without a doubt considered one of the best MC's...period...during the early 2000's.

AZ is literally one of the best lyricists/MC's ever, has a very dope platinum debut album during what many consider rap's greatest decade, and has made many track stealing spots on tracks with the GOAT Nas.

Bun B is a HIGHLY regarded MC and is without question one of the greatest MC's to come out of the South. He and Pimp C has tons of Southern classics.

Lupe Fiasco up until recently was on of the new generations Top 5 MC's (Along with Wayne, Drake, Cole, Ross), has had songs and albums that had commercial success and he's considered one of the greatest lyricists of the past decade.

I agree. And am fans of all them.
Say a child is born today though. 20 years from now you're right.. They might know Wayne.

Az and sigel though?

Which is why that's a slippery slope. Constructing that list off anything besides talent and body of work.

I wouldn't even bother arguing anyone else on that list u posted. But for me budden is light years ahead of Wayne
