Where does the myth of the "homophobic Black community" come from?

This has been the case my whole life. We had a guy who was flaming when we were in middle school and by the time we got to high school he was the first dude to dance with the dancing girls in the marching band. People called him funny or whatever but didn’t do much more than that.
I'm literally from Harlem. True story, one day me and my man was smoking with my homegirl, her man, and this nikka from the building. So we chilling, and this fifth wheel nikka start throwing out mad gay vibes. I can't recall exactly what he did, but the shyt was such a muthafukking violation that we was like, 'My nikka, you doing too much. :aicmon:' It was a whole thing, he had to leave. shyt was crazy. We rolled another one like, 'Wow, this nikka wiling. :mjlol:'

However, nobody harassed him as a result and he went on to have a passel of kids. We still don't fully understand what happened with him that night :pachaha:, but nobody harassed him. :yeshrug:

Pointing out the homophobia in other communities (namely, Black and Arab) puts the White community as de facto "gay-friendly" and you can use this issue to badmouth entire communities without being racist, just the same way "feminism" is used, same way Israel is used, same way environmental issues are starting to be used.

:dead:thecoli trynna push the black gay acceptance narrative now.

There are actual receipts of homophobia in our community. You can pull gay hate speech off this site at any hour:mjlol: but ill historical examples

MLK and his ppl wouldnt let James Baldwin speak at the march on Washington because of Baldwins sexuality. Black militants in the 60s considered homosexuality a threat to black masculinity and they still do. Thats why Huey Newton advocated for gay rights in his famous speak.

We may not run gays out of our communities or kill them like other cultures but we shun gays. Boys are beaten my male figures for acting soft, men get threaten when theres PDA with other men....parents keep their children away from Gay men...thats homophobia.

That was in consideration of White America's homophobia, not King's, who had openly gay people like Bayard Rustin in his circle. How many white preachers back then would do the same?

Respectability politics was always a consideration in the movement, even with the selection of Rosa Parks.

The reality is that James Baldwin was an openly gay celebrity that could walk through Harlem and get shown love. You'll have a hard time naming an openly gay white celebrity in the 50s/60s, let alone one that was celebrated by the everyday people of his community.

No one is saying gay shyt is wide open and accepted in the community, but relative to other communities, especially White America, the black community has been the most accepting. Nikkas talking about anecdotes or coli attitudes is not real history. Yes, black folks (like most people of African descent) openly embrace what they call Heteronormativity, but that's something different. With their history of violence and disowning of family members, white America has been historically more anti-gay than us, but they like to promote otherwise.

Only speaking for the AA community, my perception is that gays are accepted more in the hood because of the general lack of moral standards. In the hood, you can be a hoe, a wino, a crackhead, a drug dealer, and people generally don’t judge or give af.

I think in middle class AA communities, and in middle class communities in general, regardless of ethnicity, there is the intense amount of pressure to fit in to thie middle class idea of “perfection”. Have to have a nice house, nice clothes, good looking family, attend church, good education, married, etc. And anything that doesn’t fit into that perfect idea of middle class life, gets judged immensely. Out of wedlock kids, infidelity, divorce, homosexuality, drug users, etc. These things, the hood doesn’t give af about. Which is why I think most DL dudes come from middle class backgrounds. And the middle class is the most likely to attend church regularly which explain the high level of DLs in church.

Ironically, just like the hood, I don’t think upper clas AA communities give af either. Them and the hood, gays are most accepted.

And growing up around middle class whites, they are definitely the most homophobic out of any group in the US.

it was always a weird claim because the vast majority of the populace is fairly homophobic, like asking why people in Chicago drink a lot of sprites when the drink is popular across the whole globe

So we keep them in our communities, and pose no harm to that type of lifestyle, and it’s still considered just a ‘narrative?’
:patrice:
Why? I guess I should ask, who is a more accepting group than Black Americans?

Yes our homophobia has been overal lighter than the extreme homophobia in the white community but think about it...

How are we more tolerance of Gays than whites when every gay rights issue has been championed by whites? Specifically white men?

Could you imagine a world where we defend Black clergy after decades of kiddie fiddling allegations?

Again our brand of homophobia is not overt or confrontational for the most part but lets not act like we're "accepting" of homos. Italians, East Europeans, Muslims have the WOAT homophobic reactions. They advocate full on purges.

We tolerate it and that's nowhere near acceptance.
