Wash Post Amtrak strike article

Transit systems across the country were on edge Wednesday amid the threat of a freight rail worker strike, making preparations ahead of possible travel disruptions that could affect hundreds of thousands of rail customers. Amtrak said it is canceling all of its long-distance trains starting Thursday.

Some regional transit agencies said they are preparing for service stoppages as early as Thursday evening ahead of a possible 12:01 a.m. Friday shutdown. They are wrapping up plans to communicate with commuters if a strike is not averted, and some are working with other agencies to direct people to bus alternatives.

The disruptions to passenger systems that operate on freight lines would be felt across several major metropolitan areas, including Washington, Chicago and Los Angeles. The strike threat also eliminated most Amtrak service outside the Northeast Corridor, forcing travelers to find other modes of transportation or cancel plans at the last minute.

is amtrak even a profitable business in 2022? can they afford to stop service????

looks like a private business matter....

what does the president have to do with it?
Incorrect.

There is federal legislation that affords the government power to intervene and impose temporary regulations to prevent railroads strikes.

This is not a private matter, rail infrastructure was constructed with federal funding and the federal government has never not had their hands in this business. Biden has already signed an executive order on this matter.

Isn't it illegal to affect the infrastructure of the nation like this?

No it is not. Unless your in the military your have the right to strike. This is not the USSR

This ain't really about Amtrak. It's about the railroad strike. Amtrak isn't going to be the thing people are worried about if this strike happens. Store shelves will be bare. Don't think people realize how much stuff is on these trains.

This might be the kickoff people have been talking about. The thing that sets the dynamite fuse. The world will change if this happens. Especially for United States residents.

thanks for informing me... didnt know this
It's quasi-governmental, similar to USPS, I'm just mentioning this as it seems to be getting lost in the replies, and technically, your initial comments aren't entirely wrong about the situation. The executive handles appointments and executive orders can obviously impact them, congress confirms and can regulate some aspects with regards to budgeting, I think employees are technically federally employed, but a majority of their work is managed at the private level, and the company is expected to run as a for-profit and is recognized as such, stock is primarily owned by the government, the government will uphold the company as a result. It's just a situation where the entirely privatized version of the company wouldn't come close to breaking even on profits, so the government at the time recognized a need for a federally funded provider, thus, the creation of Amtrak, although it's creation and what it does it a lot more complicated than what I feel like typing here, I'm sure there are good videos on the topic.

Now I'm not speaking on the exact topic at hand in this thread as it's just a matter that Amtrak is being impacted by and as a result, was making adjustments in order to deal with it, this article goes over the specific issue:

But on the topic of Amtrak, we really needed that BBB plan to go through, America needs to get serious about public transportation, I just feel like I'm in the twilight zone when it comes to that aspect, further in the zone when it comes to America infrastructure in general. Just a clown show, tbh.

If the railroads did strike it wouldn't be the end of the world as they've gone on strike several times in the 20th century. While society wouldn't collapse there would be a lot of economic damage that would have been nice to see. The fact that railroad management was willing to risk causing major economic turmoil over SICK DAYS is crazy to me. But the railroad management also said in earlier discussions that labor contributed NOTHING to their business success so they did not deserve any of the benefits from that success.

America y’all.
