I agree. But it depends on who is doing the revering.
And the artist. I expect white mainstream artists to appeal to white mainstream critics.

If Rolling Stone gave Monster a great review I would count it.

But I don't tend to listen to their reviews unless I agree with it. Essentially I don't use them for a point of reference. Just validation.

In all honesty, I literally go to metacritic, see which magazines, etc have reviewed an album and then read each of those reviews keeping in mind that a lot of those reviewers don't specialize in hip hop music. Otherwise, I'll come to hip hop forums like this; however, it's moreso to see what the general consensus on an album is....but not as a means to shape my own view of it. And my views rarely change despite what general perception is. I'm sure I have plenty of unpopular opinions regarding music, but when it comes to something as subjective as music I think that's ok. :manny:

I think I'm the exact opposite. I use those sources as a point of reference, but not to validate my own opinion. Generally albums that get rave reviews from sources that don't traditionally review hip hop music aren't usually my favorite type of music to listen to so I just keep that in mind when reading their opinions.

I don't even know who any of these critics are to be completely honest with you. :manny:

Myself, and guys I've known 25-30 years. Occasionally if The Coli hypes something up it might go on my radar but I listen to 90% of what's posted on here, at least once off GP. Just for a temperature check.

I trust no-one....but give greater weight to those who have actual experience

for example.....

an actual mainstream artist who has recorded and successfully sold music and toured

F*ck all these armchair analysts

Like who?

I've read reviews from musicians. They're usually pretty trash.

Also isn't a cumulative effect? If 1 publication or whatever hypes an artist... it's not normally enough. But let it reach critical mass then i'll check it out.

For example - Acid Rap, great reviews.... peeped it... didn't like it = Chance is a plant in my eyes.

Then he drops Surf... takes me ages to check it out.... it's great... the reviews are deserved... I went back to Acid Rap... still didn't like it

Myself.
But I'll watch guys like The Needle Drop, Luke James Not The Singer, Big Quint and DEHH on THEIR thoughts on projects but overall they don't really change my opinion much on the things I listen too.

I mean music is subjective, so I go by how the music makes me feel first and foremost.

Most hip-hop reviewers though aren't well versed in the history of the music or just hypebeasts.

I couldn't tell you where to find a single music critic.

They serve no purpose

i might read reviews to get the feel of an album i haven't had a chance to listen to but i don't take any review as fact. i honestly couldn't name a critic.
i do the same thing with movies.

as far as video games go i find ign is pretty on point.
