I think I'm the exact opposite. I use those sources as a point of reference, but not to validate my own opinion. Generally albums that get rave reviews from sources that don't traditionally review hip hop music aren't usually my favorite type of music to listen to so I just keep that in mind when reading their opinions.
I rarely look at reviews for hip hop albums. I already know if i'm going to listen to it or not 9 times outta 10.

Caring about how "professional writers" view music = ignorant
Caring about the views of others, generally speaking, is the opposite of ignorance. But nobody's taking about "caring" about the views of critics, @SirBiatch was making the point that critics can sometimes put you into things that you didn't know that can give you a newfound appreciation or perspective on music you already love.

Let me try to give you an example. Are you familiar with the Mobb Deep song, Shook Ones Part 2?

Needing music critics in rap or ANY form of black music. :laff:

Either something is hot or it ain't...the community decides...if you ain't in the community to know what we consider hot...that's your problem.

The only reviews I trust are the Source in the 90's
I know enough to listen for myself
btw Fantano is an awful rap critic. Period. and if you think he's good step your knowledge up.

Im sure I've heard it in passing. What is your point?
Let me give it to you in a format that may appeal to you. :lolbron:

Alright - are you familiar with what Havoc (he's one of the two members of Mobb Deep and their producer, the producer makes the beats) sampled for the "guitar" sample?
