I just never understood how GZA was considered a goat tier lyricist...

Of course you don't hear it much these days but going back to my Sohh days, I used to see that all the time...

Lil Wayne from 07-2013. The most overrated rapper ever. Whored himself out so much during that period.
Content wise, I could never take Lil Wayne seriously, he made kid music imo, like music specifically just for teenagers. For yall Wayne fans, how's his shyt aging? I figured that shyt would age like milk because it was so childish and weightless.

But how can people hear his rapping ability and think he's not nice? Lil Wayne can rap rap rap man, still today. Listen to any posse cuts with Wayne on them, lol, 99% of the time he ate everybody and clearly stole the show. I can tell all he does/did was write raps (or however he created his stuff)...that's a rappin ass dude. Some of the punches and wordplay were reaches of course, but some of them were actually pretty good here and there, and his delivery/flows is insane.

This is really the only name mentioned so far that had me do a complete double take.

Did I read this correctly? Planet Asia ain't nice?!? :whoo:

To each his own, but I think that's borderline insanity. With a few obvious exceptions I could probably count on one hand, I think he's the dopest underground MC to come out of the West Coast.

There are a lot of rappers who I acknowledge can spit when truly pressed that I just don't fukk with their music for one reason or another. But one dude I never, ever saw the hype surrounding, even not taking into account his horrible mainstream tracks, was Mase.

Never saw anything remotely ill from this dude. At best to me he could be "aight".

It's not like I think Asia is wack or anything. I've been bumping 'African Style' all week. PA is a good rapper from a technical standpoint but he doesn't really have much wit or imagination or song crafting ability. He never really evolved past rappity rap. It's higher end rappity rap for sure, but that's all it really is.

His first two albums, have storytelling, concious, and other stuff besides battle rhymes. He is an elite talent. He may not be the greatest SONGWRITER, but he did everything else between above average to god tier.

You bring up the "make rappers afraid" deal, but Nas declined to be on Desperados after Canibus destroyed it. Some say he was on there and took his verse off. Pun was one of the handful of people NOT afraid to rap with him. He had the biggest hype in the game in 97, had Wyclef coming off selling a ridiculous amount of records pushing and producing him, where are the big name features on his two major label albums?

MK is dope, but certainly not for everyone.

You WILDIN'.

Jeru was super nice. Prime Preemo beats helped, but he was spitting crazy on the forst two albums.
He was on there, and took his verse off. It somehow ended up becoming Desparados Pt 2, but it definitely came out before the version that's on the album.

He may have had dabbled in other types of songs. The execution is the issue.

When I brought up the point about making rappers afraid, I know that's one if the things Canibus gets praised for. I was making mention of Pun, an MC from the same era did that and more.

Canibus had all this hype as an "elite talent", but couldn't deliver an album made the case for him being an elite talent. Can't be elite and then not be a good song writer and ok in other areas. He was elite when he was a featured artist. When the spotlight was solely on him, it revealed his weaknesses.
He was never going to be a hit maker. His voice, his style, his appearance, his nerdiness doesn't allow for that. But he's a great song writer if you want music to listen to and not catchiness. He can/could write 3 coherent verses, with a hook and it be great to listen to, but still not a hit. That shouldn't be a knock. As far as rapping ability, he was elite.

I'm not saying he had to be a hit maker. What I'm saying is he couldn't pull it all together in the manner that makes an elite artist elite: flow, lyricism, delivery, songwriting, etc. His strength was dope one liners and when he was out here killing features. If we were to put up Canibus's 10 best songs how would they stack against the 10 best from MC's considered elite?

Dudes mentioning FAB after Kendrick Lamar is comical.
Fab and Kendrick Lamar made two different records damn near on the same beat.

One is a fukking classic in "Alright" the other is whatever the fukk Fab dropped.

Dudes don't understand "Songwriting" and "Rapping" as one in the same and try to
isolate "Bars" from the SONG and what serves the SONG.

"Lyrical" 🙄 half of y'all wouldn't know lyrical if it personally walked into your crib and slapped
the dog shyt out of you.

If you don't make good songs, you aren't a good musician to me.
If you can't be LYRICAL and make GOOD SONGS, you're not a GOOD RAPPER.
Jay-Z and Nas and Biggie and Pac and Common and Talib and whoever the fukk else got dissed in this thread
by you blasphemous b*stards have already been solidified because they were both LYRICAL and made GOOD SONGS.
Song writing and rapping aren't the same. Song writing is your ability to package it. Rapping is your ability to put words together. If they were one in the same, we wouldn't have writers, now would we?

And you don't have to be a great or good rapper to make good music. Hell, Nore had a hell of a run, and he's trash as a lyricist..easily the worst out of his trio. Rick Ross and Fat Joe are solid rappers at best, and have great catalogs. Jimmy's catalog is better than Cam's. Juelz isn't great, but he made good to great music. Aside from Rick Ross (which I still don't understand), no one would ever say that these dudes are elite.

Freddie Gibbs.

Some people get caught up with that fast rapping shyt he does but he's usually not saying anything special.
FOH with that:camby:, how about we swap out Fred with a correct answer like Dave East or anyone of the long list of mediocre ass rappers that get hyped on here and can't rap for shyt. Unplug your ears man.
