The hype is the 30 footers, flashy passes, fadeaways, powerful tomahawk dunks, and chase down blocks he does every other night.

Undoubtedly one of the best showmen in league history willing to take risks to entertain but it’s always a few on the Coli. :mjlol:

One of the enduring traits of the Coli is willful obtuseness and trying their hardest to pretend their twilight zone represents a mainstream view

Kobe was never the "face" of the league in the same way LeBron and Jordan were though, certainly not from a mainstream media perspective. The ironic part is he was arguably more popular than both of them, at least when you take an international viewpoint of it.

If by face of the league you mean media push, then he definitely was the NBA's Golden Boy in the early 2000s after Jordan retired. He was the guy being pushed the most as the "next Jordan". He had all the commercials back then. McDonalds, Sprite, Adidas, etc. His own video game on Nintendo. And so on. However, it all changed after the rape charges in 2003. That is when he was no longer being officially promoted as the face of the league. Despite no longer being a media favorite Kobe's popularity with the people only increased in the mid to late 2000s.

So there was short period where Kobe was the media favorite but it didn't last as long as Jordan and LeBron.

:francis: it's gonna be rough...i think you need someone who's a 5x league MVP with 10+ all star nominations in the horizon..+3 chips...that's a tough slot to fill...and yes...curry isn't dominant enough to take that spot even with all the accolades

Its gonna be a multiple-guy carry job, a la Magic/Bird, or the space between Mike's seconds retirement to LeBron's entrance (5 years, 1998-03)...

Shout to to @Originalman and @mbewane for outstanding points upthread...

We don't know who the guy is yet because there isn't one guy at this time. That guy is coming, because NBA history tells us he always does, but we don't know who he is yet---->and chances are he either isn't in The League yet or he's extremely early in his career (Y1 or Y2 currently). But more than likely it'll be a multiple guy carry job the way Duncan, Shaq, Kobe, AI, Mac shared responsibility for The League until Bron showed up...

If its that many guys, a number of them are probably already around and mentioned in this thread...

But of course The Coliseum uses this thread to shyt on LeBron lmao...

None of these bring that aura that Bron has negative or positive

I mentioned it before on here that he is so big he has created an industry of sports talk shows that literally speak on everything he does 52 weeks out the year.

shyts unheard of. No athlete that we have ever seen has made so many millionaires in the media or social media. I mean look at them bums on first take, first things first, undisputed, the herd and speak for yourself.

We all know MJ made Sam Smith and Ahmad Rashad millions and made them household names. We all know that Ali made Howard Cosell millions and made them household names.

But lebron done made like a 2 dozen people or more millionaires and household names just off of discussing him 52 weeks out the year every damn day..:mindblown:

Look at all those fools on Fox1 making millions talking about lebron every fukking day (and I love shannon). But that shyt is insane.

Look at Stephen A. Yes the loud moth jack ass is talented. But we know the son of a bytch and that hoe skip bayless were able to reinvent themselves on espin talking about lebron.

I swear many of these mothafukkas (the men and women) making a living talking about lebron gonna fade into oblivion when lebron retires (just like Same Smith and Ahmad Rashad when MJ retired).

Breh lebron came into the league in june 2003. The allegations with kobe happened in July 2003.

Of course kobe wasn't gonna be the media darling after that. Every endorsement left him in 2003 except for nike.

Then after the allegations and the civil court case the media wouldn't shut up about it for dame near the entire decade until 2008 and beyond. But even then he only had a few endorsement deals and most of them except nike were only aired in cali.

Yes his name was bigger by the late 2000s and beyond. But his marketability was not on the same level as before 2003 when he had all types of endorsement deals and appearances.

Kobe never was the singular face of The League. He was in a group of four or five post-2nd retirement, pre-LeBron...

Then Colorado happened and his marketability took a hit for several years. When he climbed back to high marketability, it was already, if not LeBron's league solely, was right on the cusp of it, and the NBA gave Dwight a hell of a push for two years or so too...

After that it was all LeBron...

Guys on here consistently conflate Kobe's popularity with other things. He lost marketability/popularity with these corporations and endorsements he was allied with, but from about Year 4 or 5 on, he never lost popularity with most of basketball's fanbase. Easily one of the most popular ballers of all time, on a short, short list...

That is NOT the same as being the singular face of The League, you could argue two periods (early 00s, late 00s-2010) he was one of the faces but he was never approaching LeBron or Jordan levels of NBA dominion...

Notice nobodys mentioning Durant. Just goes to show nobody respects him

Durant, whose already in Y14, is gonna be the face of the NBA when LeBron retires, at which point he'll be in Y16 or later?

Do you understand the premise of the thread?

Damn I almost convinced me then I thought about the 3 times I saw him play live and didn’t even realize he was on then court

You saw Bron play the Kings in person three times and didn't know he was on the court? You gotta be talking about some other opponent or went somewhere else because theres no way you saw him come to Sacramento and didn't know he was on the floor lmao...

Who did the Kings have taking attention abd gravitas away from LeBron hahaha...

Who knows :manny:

Nobody saw a Steph emerging.

Most likely Luka ...media & Silver would love to have him as the face . Only issue is he isn’t American. I truly believe that’s what held Dirk back .

Even a Steve Nash got that push because he could at-least pass for American accent wise

Dirk really doesnt have a german accent.
