doesn't matter. it would've just been another forgettable song if not for Nas. Let's be real here. Part of Em's legacy rests on "Stan", and that legacy exists because of Nas. Nobody remembers "Kim" or whatever songs Em made.

The goat changed Stan from a proper noun to a common noun. Hilarious and smart shyt :ahh:

Plus Em got the idea for Stan from Nas (One Love). So the cypher's complete :ahh:
Every person on earth knows Eminem. Dido, the singer featured on that song, was famous af at the time.

Nas is known, especially in the US and by Hip-Hop fans outside of the US.

But Eminem is a POP worldwide phenomenon who did arena tours. Stan was a worldwide hit. White kids in Russia were bumping that shyt.

You confuse the US with the World, like your President. Fatal mistake rookie.

Thecoli's weird bias against em rears its ugly head once again:scust:

I didn't even remember nas calling jay a stan in ether. It's nowhere near the most quoted line. Y'all can't be serious with this nas made stan a thing

I heard folks using the term "Stan" in regular conversation literally right after the Eminem song dropped in 2000.

I'm thinking that a good number of the posters who credit Nas were probably watching The Teletubbies in aftercare programs when "Stan" and "Marshall Mathers" hit the market.

We're talking here about one of the highest-selling songs and album tracks
in Hip Hop and pop music history. They're living in an iGeneration Smartphone bubble.

Before the World Trade Center came down on 9-11, probably the biggest controversy
in 2001 was when Elton John chose to perform "Stan" on the Grammys with Eminem.

I remember the 24-hour cable news channels going wall-to-wall coverage on the song and the
protests. We were overwhelmed with "Exclusive 'Stan' Updates" at 6 pm and 11 pm for about two weeks.

On this day, exactly 16 years ago (February 21, 2001) Eminem and Elton John performed Em’s critically acclaimed song “Stan” live at the 2001 Grammy Awards. Coming off the success of his massively successful diamond certified album The Marshall Mathers LP, Eminem was by far one of the most polarizing figures in the music industry. A result of his maverick attitude, dark song content and perhaps what caused him to receive the brunt of the vitriol hurled his way; the perception that Eminem was homophobic.

Many organizations took issue with what they perceived to be homophobic lyrics by Em, with The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) being at the forefront of this crusade against Eminem. GLAAD picketed in front of the Staples Center, where the Grammys were being held, urging people to boycott Eminem as a result of their assertion that Eminem’s lyrics incite violence against homosexuals. This is what made the performance with Elton John, one of the preeminent celebrities in the gay community, all the more unexpected.

The pop kids who were bumping "Stan" back then would be confused if you used the word 'stan' in a sentence in 2017. They've probably forgotten the word and song to be honest.

Nas created the hip hop meaning behind that word and it's become part of everyday hip hop language.

We all know and acknowledge that Eminem came up with the song Stan and that it was a huge hit. Nobody is disputing that. But Eminem did not start calling obsessed people stans.

I've been around these message boards since before nasbbs and don't recall anyone using the word referring to an obsessed person. I'm not saying it didn't happen but Nas is who made it popular in the way we use it today.

So yes. Obviously without the song Nas could not refer to it, but without Nas the word wouldn't be used today.

We all know Dark skinned Jermaine was a lame because of Biggie or Jay if you're younger. Nobody is calling lame people Jermaine. It's not a popular term. If Meek called Drake dark skinned Jermaine in a song and everybody started using that term referring to lames, then Meek would get credit for making it popular
