While I agree with you for the most part nerd is also used as another word for smart. That's why the stereotype of the nerd used to be some cat looking like Urkel with pants hitched up to his chest. That's a part of it but I also agree with you people should know what its used as going by context. Most times when cats call people on here nerds they're doing it from that socially awkward pov not the you smart pov.

Nerd (adjective: nerdy) is a descriptive term, often used pejoratively, indicating that a person is overly intellectual, obsessive, or lacking social skills. They may spend inordinate amounts of time on unpopular, obscure, or non-mainstream activities, which are generally either highly technical or relating to topics of fiction or fantasy, to the exclusion of more mainstream activities.

Nerds in theory are "smart" to the point where they are comically idiots as they are so socially awkward that they can't even apply the knowledge.

An Anti Intellect and a Nerd are both buffoons.

Like I said, we have to end this correlation that smart = nerd when they are not 100% exclusive to each other. A Nerd is someone so obsessed with something they are socially awkward.

You have tons of people throughout history who were intelligent and had discipline that were not socially awkward. This is where I`m going with this.

People re trying to pull the "nobody messes with me because I`m smart" card when its really nobody messes with you because you are awkward to the point where one may have to question your mental state.

Like I said I know tons of people who enjoy unpopular things but would not be considered nerds.

Not true at all. The social etymology of the word nerd does have a direct correlation to academics. The phrase as we know it was popularized at MIT. It was seen as a derogatory shot at the math "nurds" at the university, The phrase nerds does have a start in Academics. Dismissing that is ignoring history here. It was givin to the socially awkward at MIT, but those students were the smartest students.

Your statement " Doing what your suppose to do does not = being a nerd. We need to dead this crap".

Is legit, but it's not realistic. Theres a reason there's a thing in college called

Summa Cum Laude
Magna Cum Laude ( We in here)
Cum Laude

And in high school there's
Valedictorian
Salutatorian

Not everybody is doing this. You can blame tons of reasons. Social economic reasons, peer pressure to not be cool, etc and etc. but not everybody is in the same box right now.

Finally what is your definition of awkwardness? You say nerds are labeled as awkward. What do you mean? Playing Yugioh or Pokemon? Playing dungeons and dragons? Not being coordinated? Wearing glasses? Wearing pocket protectors? If you're going to use the mainstream social definition of awkward for nerds, why can't the intelligent points apply as well?

But I will admit a lot of high academic people, do struggle with common sense. That's legit!!

once again graduating with Academic honors DOES NOT make you a nerd. One is qualified as being a nerd because of their social awkwardness. Being Socially awkward is not exclusive to being smart.

Nerds use "smart" as the reason nobody rocks with them when it is their social awkwardness.

People pushing the "Smart = nerd" thing creates an Anti Intellectual culture.

Man, woman, and child
Because the media tells us so:what:

If u an 80's baby you know Family Matters, Saved By the Bell and Ninja Turtles were 3 of the most popular shows we watched. All 3 featured an extremely smart "nerd": Urkel, Screech and Donatello. So growing up, we mostly correlated nerds to be the smartest person in the room.
That's true. The cool kids like AC Slater and Eddie Winslow sucked in class

People misuse the label "nerd" a lot. I've seen one person in this thread correctly interpret what a nerd actually is. There is a stark difference in "nerds" and what people confused as nerds with "geeks."

Nerds are gifted, usually the smartest people in the room and generally go on to do great things that are a benefit to society, even while being socially awkward and having interests that are deemed "different."

Geeks are the ones who have weird, dumb interests that don't or never will have an impact on society. They aren't as smart as nerds and they generally have disgusting habits that repel anyone other than the people in their group from wanting to be social with them.

The issue at hand is people are basing their definitions off of 90s tv shows lol.

With this logic all of our prominent Black Scholars were Nerds.

Once again the qualifier for nerd is ones social awkwardness.

Intelligence and Discipline have nothing to do with being a nerd. You are a nerd when your obsessiveness of something creates a social awkwardness.

We ignorantly correlate Nerd to doing what your are suppose to do as it is an easy way for nerds to make themselves feel better about their situation. This in turns helps fuel the Anti intellectual culture as Nerds are saying they are outcast because they are "Smart" when the truth in matter is it is because they are weird.

This articulates why the hip-hop generation(let's say 1980-2000) is where they're at as far as education is concerned.
