Coming off the other thread, it's pretty interesting seeing so many votes saying Microsoft would be the one to go if it had to come down to it.

For me I'd say Nintendo made the biggest contributions to gaming overall with Sony second.. Microsoft's contributions were mainly improvements to existing things(Sega Dreamcast broadband=Xbox Live, Memory Cards=Internal Storage, Goldeneye=Halo.)

Here's why:

Nintendo pretty much got gaming to be viable at home with the NES. Super Mario Bros and DKC put side scrollers on the map. Nintendo changed the game with the N64 joystick, the rumble pak, Multiplayer on consoles, Gameboy and mobile gaming etc.

They also came through with the revolutionary 3d game such as Mario 64 and Zelda OOT. It seems remiss to not mention Nintendo when talking about gaming and how it came down to it. Without Nintendo, we'd not have Sega Genesis and PSX which brings me to Sony...

It seems like some would say.. "Well what about Sony?"
Well Sony set off the new age of gaming. PSX and PS2 set the scene for modern gaming. Sony pretty much allowed a multitude of devs to make games for the PSX and they looked beautiful at it. Cinematic gaming. Without PSX we probably wouldn't have seen games like Metal Gear Solid, Syphon Filter, Gran Turismo, FFVII etc. PSX made everyone a gamer. It "advanced" gaming so to speak in a mature way. The Dualshock controller, music player etc.

Even hardcore Xbox Fans have to give it to Sony, you was probably rocking a Playstation 1 or 2 before you started hopping on Xbox :umad:.

Now Microsoft... They seem to be the underdog this gen(for other reasons I won't go into..) and seems to have lost some goodwill with the gaming pubilc since this gen started.

Now they admittedly brought some big changes to gaming too. Aha you thought I'd close the thread here and start a fanboy thread huh?? They came through with Internal storage, Xbox Live and Halo. Now some will say Goldeneye brought FPS on the map but I think Halo was a tad bit better especially with online. Halo CE on Xbox 1 was crack back in the days.

*@AkaDemiK is :mjcry: right now*

Anyway, internal storage was pretty big now that you think about it. Not having to worry about a MC was big back then but it's taken for granted now.
Xbox Live brought the broadband gaming to a respectable level with friends list. I wasn't really into online gaming back then as I didn't get internet until 2003 with my PC and I owned only a GC and PS2 back then.

I'd say Xbox brought some PC gamers over to consoles for a while.

Valve... Steam. Nuff said. Made PC gaming MUCH better. No more GAME.exe flooding the desktop. Just a nice interface to buy games, amazing sales and a streamlined interface to manage all that.

What y'all think?

Nintendo by a country mile. They saved the gaming industry after the crash with the NES and Miyamoto is the godfather of games design and EVERYBODY in the gaming industry respects and admires him.

PlayStation...Well the first PlayStation brought about a new era in gaming where consoles were no longer considered kids toys and showed that video games were a legitimate medium of art and entertainment.

I can't even speak on steam personally because I don't game on PC but from what I hear and see, its an amazing service.

Microsoft: The first to properly introduce online gaming into consoles.

This is no brainer. Nintendo. Like the previous post mentioned, Nintendo saved the whole industry from the 1983 video game crash. It also marked the beginning of legendary IPs like Metroid, Mario, Castlevania, Megaman, Final Fantasy, Zelda, Dragon Quest and many more.

Sony comes second. They brought gaming into a whole new level. They brought more mature and realistic games with the use of 3d graphics and marked some of existing IPs in their pinnacle of its lifetime (Final Fantasy VII, Castlevania: Symphony of The Night, Metal Gear Solid)

Nintendo is the company that goes out on a limb go be innovative. It's a shame to see them failing the way they are but gaming wouldn't be what it is today of it weren't for their willingness to take huge risks.

Nintendo pioneered the home console blueprint that Sony took mainstream and made way more successful. Microsoft has pretty much defined the home console experience as it is today with a more modern OS and a unified online service, DLC, and achievements.

From where we are today I couldn't call it. All of them contributed equally.

Uh....nah.

It was actually inferior to the PS in virtually every way. Sega mistakenly designed it to be a 2D power house when 3D was the next wave.

Even flagship Sega titles like "Tomb Raider" were inferior to their PS counterparts. Hell, I still got the old "Gamefan", "Next Gen", etc. mags with the first Sega "TR" reviews. It was disappointment across the board.

In an era where 2d games where still poppin hard, and for the best 3d games you went to the arcade.
