Gay Black Men Helped Create EDM. Why Do Straight White Men Dominate It?

Frankie Knuckles -- who would come to be known as the godfather of the genre -- played there, grafting gospel and soul vocals over kick drums made with the era’s emerging drum machine technology and played at 120-130 beats per minute. With a thrilling soundtrack, the gay men populating the dancefloor could freely express themselves.

“Being ostracized as black, gay kids,” says Dunson, founder/president of the Frankie Knuckles Foundation, which works to preserve Knuckles’ legacy and support his causes, “this felt like a place where we could be who we were while being protected from the judgments of society.”

“Chicago was kind of a racist town,” adds Warehouse founder Robert Williams, who relocated to the Midwest from New York in the early ’70s. He recruited Knuckles to be the resident DJ at his new club. The Warehouse “was a haven for the gay community, which also turned into the heterosexual community, because the gay kids were inviting their heterosexual friends who were dying to come in.”

From Knuckles and company in Chicago to fellow house innovators David Mancuso and Larry Levan in New York, dance music’s roots in the gay club scenes of the late ’70s and early ’80s are well documented. Gay men, and particularly gay men of color, are widely credited with creating house music and planting the seeds of the many genres that have evolved from it.

Walk into a Las Vegas club today, and you’ll hear music -- mainly, what’s known as EDM -- that draws on this earlier sound. Like the blues and other genres before it, it is music forged by a marginalized community that is now dominated by the heteronormative mainstream, with straight, white, cisgender men populating label boardrooms and festival lineups. While underground LGBTQ-oriented clubs continue trendsetting in major cities, in the most visible and lucrative incarnations of the scene they created, gay and black artists are in the minority.

I always thought that shyt was trash, and sounded like it was created by europeans and homosexuals just like this article is talking about:scust:
Before you talk about hiphop influenced house, its not the same thing. Because its the hiphop influence that makes it listenable and okay, not the house influence.

The original founders of techno were 3 STRAIGHT Black dudes from Detroit that grew up on Parliament

Juan Atkins
Kevin Saunderson
Derrick May

The original Chicago house scene was MIXED with straight and gay Black dudes like Frankie Knuckles, Jamie Principal, Steve Silk Hurley, Mr. Fingers, Jesse Saunders, and cats like that.

Europeans didn't invent shyt. They didn't start doing house until the late '80s/early '90s.

White people basically tried to steal it like Rock n Roll but the Black producers have more talent and skill and cannot be stopped..this isnt the 1950s.
More Black people are now involved and making money..honestly, Id rather encourage a Black kid to try his hand at house than trap etc.
I know that one trick whites used was to organize huge edm shows and omit any Black person, to give the impression Blacks are not involved. Know thy enemy!

They grew up on parliment and should have stuck with that, funk is black music.
I guess you will leave out the part where they were inspired by Disco?first thing I read when researching this

"It all started in Chicago’s Southside in 1977, when a new kind of club opened. This new Chicago club called The Warehouse gave House music its name. Frankie Knuckles, who opened The Warehouse, mixed old disco classics and new Eurobeat pop. It was at this legendary club where many of the experiments were tried. It was also where Acid House got its start.

House was the first direct descendant of disco"

Disco is homosexual music from nikkas who occupied european spaces, that were homosexual environments:martin:
Like I said, that shyt is trash and not black music. Not saying it's white music either, but definitely not black music and nikkas have unanimously rejected it overall.
Use your ears,ears don't lie.

By his argument we must pretend Luther doesnt have a fire catalogue..

That's fine..but in house music I have never ever heard a song with gay themes in it. Never! They sing of peace and love between man and woman and all people which is rare in other forms of Black music these days.

You need to get @Every Moment... Older

It said 90 house doesn’t sound good and claimed he was a tropical house music fan. Then he tried to claim Puerto Rican’s started house. He for real real said this stuff. I’m like cac :hhh: shut the hell up.

Puerto Rican's recently had the balls to try and claim they started hip hop :mjlol:

This is exactly what happens when you let sinister outsiders with ulterior motives into your circle..
these people may think youre cool, but they not your friends:pacspit:

So do you dismiss all music that had homosexuals involved? Homosexuals are creatives by nature and have been heavily involved in every major artistic movement. They’re all up and through gospel music which has influenced most American music genres. Can anyone deny the influence of George Cleveland? What about hip hop? Can anyone deny the influence of Bambaatta? Despite their own personal issues......

The gays were a non-issue to straight house heads, they just cared about the good music.

Some of y’all folks are that insecure that you feel that you going to turn gay by listening to the music? :mjlol:
