Why do churches still collect tithes if it's an Old Testament thing?

Most pastors I've known are working class. My pops in law is 70 and worked full time outside of the church until his 50's and worked part time in a store he co-owned until about 3-4 years ago. When the church hit financial troubles (due to lack of tithes) he refused a paycheck for about a year and lived off their savings. Despite the narrative most pastors ain't living big. Plus the ones I know typically work way more than 40 hours a week at the church so it makes perfect sense that they receive a salary from the people they're serving. Beyond that tithes go to the upkeep and maintenance of the church itself whether its the building and a mortgage/rent, cleaning or repairs or other ministries the church is involved in.

This...

When I was going to church, my pastor had a full time gig too.... and still did 30 plus hours in the church easily.... Upon the board's insistence, he took a small salary ... but I bet that shyt aint changed in 20 years....

on the church members dollar :umad:
He actually tells us that he takes x percentage. No raises no bonuses etc. The church is kinda big and has a lot of members. Plus it wasn't always big so him getting more members and growing the church is his raise. I aint mad at that.

Personally im not giving 10% though. I might slide a dub every once n a while though.

I mean anytime something negative is brought up about the bible the response is always well that's the Old Testament and we have new laws now. If that's the case shouldn't we do away with tithing?

No. Food pantries, shelters, homeless ministries and other things are done with the money. It is written that God loves a cheerful giver. Just like the story where the old woman cast in her two mites vs the rich who gave their abundance.

It isn't just in church either. I've gone to restaurants and asked all the servers to stop by for a min. Gave them each a dove and told them the Lord has blessed me and I'm blessing them. Whatever you do make sure it is from the heart.

Tithes pay the mortgage/rent and they keep the building lit and heated.

New bibles/hymnals because your bad children or niece's and nephews keep abusing the old ones.

Stock the pantry so that when a homeless/ poverty stricken man/woman or family is in need, their needs can be met.

Maintains the church vans or bus so your grandmother who you're too lazy to drop off and pick up from church in a timely fashion can praise God on time without relying on her unreliable relatives to get her there.

Pastor probably gets a pittance in comparison to the work he/she actually does.

Somewhere in the bible I forgot where it says to give to the person that's teaching the word.. and your helping the building costs etc..

Just thinkin about it you reap what you sow so f you giving to the church God's going to give back to you.

Tithes were collected in the new testament too. If you don't feel comfortable giving tithes to your church do something else with it.
