My understanding is that during the revolution and immediately after the revolution, it was split among racial lines between support and opposition for castro. White cubans, particularly the wealthy who benefitted from the corruption of Batista, hated him while the poor which was made up via racial oppression of black cubans loved him. The black cubans had rightful grievances given how racist the Batista regime was. Just for example, black citizens couldn't go to normal hospitals for healthcare. They had to go to local catholic charitable organizations to get help. You had black Cubans literally dying in the street and not allowed in hospitals.
Now, the feelings is mixed. Castro spent his goodwill earned among the poor mostly black Cubans by jailing political prisoners of all types and post-revolution life not being that great.
