My understanding is that during the revolution and immediately after the revolution, it was split among racial lines between support and opposition for castro. White cubans, particularly the wealthy who benefitted from the corruption of Batista, hated him while the poor which was made up via racial oppression of black cubans loved him. The black cubans had rightful grievances given how racist the Batista regime was. Just for example, black citizens couldn't go to normal hospitals for healthcare. They had to go to local catholic charitable organizations to get help. You had black Cubans literally dying in the street and not allowed in hospitals.

Now, the feelings is mixed. Castro spent his goodwill earned among the poor mostly black Cubans by jailing political prisoners of all types and post-revolution life not being that great.

I wasn't born in the island or been there but from what I've heard around here was that he took control over everything and tortured those who opposed him. He created a system where everyone gets equal things. Which you may think is fine, but it's not enough. Hearing stories of families getting one chicken a week, a cup of rice a day, etc. Imagine you're a doctor here and you the same as a McDonald's worker. It's like he decided what people did with their money and how much they got. Ain't no six certs ballers in Cuba. He also makes every child, or I think boy, join the military at like 13 or so. My dad left when he was 10 or 11 luckily. People like Castro because he created a system of equality especially during a time when civil rights was going on. But it's not worth it. There needs to be equality but also opportunity to grow. I've heard stories of how Havana was like the las Vegas of the past. Then when he came in and took over that all ended. Cubans hated Castro because he held people back from success. Imagine if you work hard in this country and the government says whatever you own is theirs. Not to mention all the political prisoners he took. People argue here about those who voted for trump and those who didn't, but over there you have no other choices. I'm surprised he lasted so long but of course with the Russians backing him and some of his citizens admiring him, I can see why.

What's funny about some of y'all comments is batista wasn't white....
What?

There's a very complex system of how "race" or identity is perceived in latin america.....but I've heard multiple times that Fidel Castro was the first Cuban leader to acknowledge having any African blood.

Sure he was pandering to the Afro-Cuban populace by doing that, but it fits the history that I've read about Latin America.

What was Batista.....Spaniard...combination of Spaniard and Indio?

The white Cubans in Miami who hate Castro are the descendants of the rich and influential white Cubans in Cuba who benefited under that scumbag piece of shyt Fulgencio Batista.

Castro ended that shyt.

The rest who hate Castro are probably family members of Cuban criminals, whom Castro came down on very harshly.
