?

Im not up to speed on this topic

Im around alot of Cubans & they cant stand this guy
Seizure of wealth caused the wealthy cubans to hate him. The failure of Cuba to evolve to its max potential (du to the US embargo) caused the lower class to get tired of the regime

Castro had his supporters but not all benefited from his regime so he's bound to have haters from people from various walks of life who grew disgruntled. This is why i was saying Kaepernik (sp) was dumb and others like him who admire these revolutionary men need to understand that with their admiration comes backlash because in order to maintain power these same men that they admire have had to (as we say in my country) "break some bones" and sometimes innocent ones. These men have real victims that you may cross paths with all over the place. So while you think you're repping being against the system with your overpriced tshirt the random cuban dude looking at you weird may be staring at the man who had his uncle or grandad executed on your shirt.

Im a big Castro and Chavez supporter myself. But you gotta watch how you express it

Read a book called Havana Nocturne. Batista was a US-backed dictator in the 50s who was corrupt as fukk and so was the entire bureaucracy underneath him. Everybody in that corrupt upper and middle class was eating off US gambling/sex/entertainment tourism. The mob set up shop in Cuba and Batista was skimming big time off the top. And the power base was cracking down HARD on the people to stay in power; torture, murder and all that.

Castro takes over and that whole system collapses, so now you've got a bunch of broke ass ex-rich people who sided with the dictator now pissed off their gravy train is over and probably got Castro out for that ass. So, they hit the boats. The US wet foot dry foot policy was basically a concession for their loyalty to the US and Batista during their civil war.

Castro was a clown and I don't stan for him, but i'm not going to pretend like Cuba was this fairy tale before he took over.

What?

There's a very complex system of how "race" or identity is perceived in latin america.....but I've heard multiple times that Fidel Castro was the first Cuban leader to acknowledge having any African blood.

Sure he was pandering to the Afro-Cuban populace by doing that, but it fits the history that I've read about Latin America.

What was Batista.....Spaniard...combination of Spaniard and Indio?
Fidel Castro is 100% white Spaniard. he never claim to have any African blood i don't know where you got that from
Batista was the first nonwhite Cuban president; he was a mestizo or a mulatoo
Neither was Rafael Trujillo of DR.

Still didn't stop them from viewing Blacks as subhuman and inferior
while i'm sure Batista felt that way do we have any proof that he view blacks that way?
segregation and institutional racism predates Batista
some of you are viewing the Cuban Revolution through a strictly American racial view point which would be only a part of it
Didn't the same happen under Batista to a different class and race of individuals, but worse?
not sure, but i do know that under is first presidency and his successor's rule (he had a lot of influence on him), Cuba simultaneously became one of the richest nations in Latin America and also one of the most unfair. He also supported unions which would later help Castro come to power

Yes, and what was going on before Batista? Why did he change his ideals after living in America...where he was influenced by our racial dynamic and certain criminal social elements?

When Cuba was lending support to Angola revolutionaries in the 1970s.......he delivered this speech

excerpts here

"But we must tell the Yankees to bar in mind that we are a LatinAmerican nation and a Latin‐African nation as well. African blood flows freely through our veins. Many of our ancestors came as slaves from Africa to this land. They fought as members of the Liberating Army of Cuba. We are brothers and sisters of the people of Africa and we are ready to fight on their behalf"

article here
Forward, With Fidel, Anywhere

Like I said in the other post.....I wasn't sure if he was pandering to the Afro-Cubans by saying that...but his words were a HUGE departure from the rhetoric of past Cuban and Latin American leaders who acted as though Africans didn't exist in the gene pool or culture of their countries.

This is the example I was thinking of but I believe that there are other public statements. Was not sure if he was speaking literally or figuratively.

Now who else wanna fukk with Hollywood Court?
I wasn't born in the island or been there but from what I've heard around here was that he took control over everything and tortured those who opposed him. He created a system where everyone gets equal things. Which you may think is fine, but it's not enough. Hearing stories of families getting one chicken a week, a cup of rice a day, etc. Imagine you're a doctor here and you the same as a McDonald's worker. It's like he decided what people did with their money and how much they got. Ain't no six certs ballers in Cuba. He also makes every child, or I think boy, join the military at like 13 or so. My dad left when he was 10 or 11 luckily. People like Castro because he created a system of equality especially during a time when civil rights was going on. But it's not worth it. There needs to be equality but also opportunity to grow. I've heard stories of how Havana was like the las Vegas of the past. Then when he came in and took over that all ended. Cubans hated Castro because he held people back from success. Imagine if you work hard in this country and the government says whatever you own is theirs. Not to mention all the political prisoners he took. People argue here about those who voted for trump and those who didn't, but over there you have no other choices. I'm surprised he lasted so long but of course with the Russians backing him and some of his citizens admiring him, I can see why.

The sanctions and embargo have held Cuba back more than Castro, blame the US for the conditions in Cuba currently.

All around Cuba you have examples of what countries look like because of American interference.

Because it wasn't. It was so much worse under Batista.

Under Batista, Cuba had 1 of the lowest life expectancy rates and highest mortality rates in the world. They were also one of the most impoverished and most illiterate in the world.

All of those things got much better under Castro

The Comfort Zone
I've spent a lot of time in Cuba over the past few months. MANY, many Cubans would LOVE to see the Castro regime be done with. They just can't express it because they still face persecution. Streets really do be watching.

There are a lot of correct posts in here. Tista' was in fact, non-white (way blacker than Castro) and actually faced discrimination himself. It could be argued that his policy were driven by moreso greed and a :manny: attitude than personal hatred for blacks. He was benefiting from the system by being President.

The Revolution made perfect sense in theory, but post-revolution the ball was completely dropped. As previously mentioned, Castro was NOT black. The life of the AVERAGE Cuban barely improved (if at all). Hustling is a way of life, and I've seen some very fukked up shyt that some of them get into just to make a few dollars.

Make no mistake, there is STILL blatant racial discrimination in Cuba. Life is very shytty for far too many black Cubans.

Pensions ain't shyt (old people begging in the street after working all their lives), rations getting less, prices for basic necessities increasing, etc.

You better have some fam or a spouse overseas or you're screwed.

"Behind every great fortune, there is a crime" Balzac

This line is the opening of the book, The Godfather. In GF 2..though fictional, they depict the way American interests (legit and criminal) basically ran Cuba. They even depict the fall of Batista.

Living longer, shytty lives man.

Many Cubans have adopted the mentality of "what is the point of devoting so much time to education if I'm gonna make $25 bucks a month?"

Sure, you can make the argument that things got "better" but certainly not by much. Black Cubans STILL can't get or have a very hard time getting into certain establishments.

Fancy restaurants, high level clubs, luxury hotels, only until recently were locals flat out banned.

Exactly.

It's also crazy how much propaganda there is about Castro. Life expectancy is very high there which is surprising and they have better health care than the US.

Recently they had the Elian Gonzalez thing on CNN and people are still mad Elian loves Castro.

Batista's policies were based on capitalism. It's ironic Castro was anti capitalist considering he was from a wealthy Spaniard family that owned a lot of land.
