No it's not. Battling stripped away the beat to allow the focus to be placed solely on the bars. When there's a beat playin or it's off the top it limits what you can do lyrically. Go watch those old beat battles and compare it to today. Those guys were just making fun of someone's appearance or calling them gay the whole time. It was okay at the time but lyrics have advanced so much it makes the old stuff unwatchable.

I think a lot of people stopped following battles and it became too advanced for their ears. You can't recognize a scheme, set up, punch, entendres, or all the inside jokes/personals if you don't consistently follow the scene. If you love lyricism there's no way you can disrespect the current state of battling.

nothing wrong with acapella but youre still supposed to flow.

if youre strictly focusing on the bars, then yes its dumbed-down.

and yall are using these corny backpack videos as prime example of old battles.

listen to rappers rapping over the same style trap beats for years with no complains, but get tired of the battle rap format cuz they dont 'switch it up' and throw a beat on brehs

for real tho, battle rap is dope, its just hard to know where to start, especially if you're not already fukkin with it. a alot of it is super self referential, especially nowadays, so if you dont get the references or the backstories people refer to in their rounds sometimes its hard to get hooked.

theres also a ton of leagues and rappers now so if you dont have a good place to start, you may end up watching some trash ass battles and feeling like :martin:

i put a list down below for names to keep an eye out for if youre interested in looking for some stuff.

the main leagues i watch are:

URL (some events to check for: NOME, Summer Madness)
KOTD (blackout, world domination)
Don't Flop (when they have american guests battling) (birthday weekends mostly)
AHAT
LABG
black ice cartel or whoever puts on battles in St. Louis/Chicago

battlers i fukk with overall:

dizaster (diz vs iron solomon is dope)
loaded lux
big T
ness lee
marv won
dumbfoundead
QP (from cali)
QP (from michigan, hes better to me)
JC
Born
100 bulletz
daylyt (daylyt vs reed dollaz, or daylyt vs chilla jones, both fire)
thesaurus (thesaurus vs fresco is a good battle)
nocando (old school grindtime him vs dizaster is tight)
jonny storm
uno lavoz (watch uno lavoz vs stainless, you will die of laughter)
carter deems
kg the poet
head ice
caustic
Pass (any of his recent battles are pretty solid watches)
Arsonal (most consistent)
hitman holla (watch hitman vs jon jon da don, or hitman vs aye verb)
aye verb
bill collector (him vs shotgun suge is dope)
match hoffa
calico (lux vs calico)
DNA (check DNA vs dizaster)
K-shine
Tay Roc
Charlie Clips (check charlie vs tay roc or charlie vs t-rex)

Do rappers that don't battle make shytty music? Yes or no.

Battle rap in 2016 is not about music. That's what your not understanding man. Battling to bests in 2016 is like someone trying to convince you that beepers/pagers are what's hot in the streets fam. :snoop:

You have a huge disconnect from the current culture

There are more wack songs than dope ones. My favorite rapper LL Cool J had made more wack songs than dope ones.

So yes. Everyone makes wack songs.

I haven't heard THAT many actual songs by battle rappers but I can't recall hearing ONE that caught my ear.

Why don't the battle rappers post their battles in text form like we used to way back in the 00s? Cause the performance is part of it. Their actual voice is part of it. So while it's not 'music', it is everything to do with MCing besides the rythm.

Imagine DJs cuttin up and blending a capellas.

Imagine a break dancer with no beat doing his moves at half the normal speed.

I am definitely out of touch with the current culture. I started rhyming in 83.

Have you considered that the current culture has gotten out of touch with it's roots?

Maybe you misunderstand me:

I am all for niqqas rappin in whatever way they like. If there are millions of people diggin battle rap then I want the best for that scene.

Me personally: I am not that moved by niqqas spittin writtens a capella. This is coming from someone who has participated in a couple freestyle battles over beats. I beat a few niqqas. I got beat by a few.

battling over beats is an entirely different monster than what today's battling is.

most nikkas still think battling is what it was back when we were young and because they grew out of that, they dont bother seeing whats changed.

its not even close, and sadly, its a waste of time to try to convince nikkas who dont wanna be convinced. :yeshrug:

ima keep watching the battles, the quality of the bars has skyrocketed, as has the performance value and the events they hold across the world.

some nikkas now in battles dont have great flows, but some people have crazy flows. England still has grime clashes which is still battling over beats too

battling is completely seperated from making rap music, which is kinda why alot of battlers arent good at making songs, its two different beasts.

id recommend people check out Minnesota Luke's youtube page, he heps to shine light on the culture in an easy to catch up way, and he basically goes thru and highlights all the fire-est moments, so you dont have to do the legwork yourself.

I fukk with battle rap. If I wanted to hear rhyming over beats I'd listen to music, imo battle rap occupies a different space. It's about lyricism, schemes, performance, etc. but I'll basically be repeating what others have said so I'll leave it at that. For those that want battle rap over beats, here you go: Skip to 35:54

I fukks with it here and there back HS it was life.
Lux vs Calicoe got me on it again some what.

Buts it's very primal and masculine and about using the most creative way to demolish a mans philosophy without using them hands sans math Hoffa

Why ya nikkas always need beats with bells and hi hats and singing ass nikkas to enjoy the poetry of hiphop.

When it's good, it's really represents the street element of hiphop that is sorely missing. End rant.
