I liked the early SMACK BATTLES that took place on street corners and barbershops with cats like Jae Millz and Murda Mook

The PHILLY street battles were great too with Bugsy and Eness

Now these referee matches with the sponsors broadcasting on streaming PPV is too much hollywood shyt

I miss the RAWNESS of it

Battle rap has grown tho man. Wouldn't you want the sport to move forward.

There was only one big judged battle and that was total slaughter. And most battle rap fans heavily criticized that event

Im into music moreso for the musical aspect of it than pure lyrics. When you remove the music im no longer interested.

Everywhere...You never there.
Shyt got lame as fukk and infiltrated by a bunch of weirdos .

It peaked with mook and serious Jones and them when Smack was still relegated to dvd. ..

It does take talent to recite the content , make it somewhat engaging and deliver it with some flair , but what they're doing now isn't battle rap. It should have it's own lane . I'd suggest calling it urban oratory or something. And then when Bis brought out the notebook it was officially over. Word to Warren G.

Battle rap in 2016 isn't about music

its dumbed-down.

its one thing to not use beats, but they don't flow acapella either. if it was at least like the DVD days, I would support.

like people said earlier in here, when they start using beats, its gonna automatically weed out the wack battlers.

Bis acapella'd a few 16s for mixtapes early in his career .... and he cypher'd acapella a lot

Either way the battle shyt got lame ... you're fighting losing battle on this one man.

It has almost become too insular and niche oriented . As others have said , they got on some real WWE shyt with storylines and shyt and promos. .. :camby:

Weirdos .

battle rap is the final frontier of hip hop. It is hip hop in its purest form.
It's not about record labels, it's not about who has the hottest producer, it's not about how many IG and Twitter followers a battle rapper has.

:comeon:

Biting and copying somebody's style is forbidden and heavily ground upon. Recycling is not allowed and heavily frowned upon. Battle rappers have no doubt the best pens, the most creativity and are able to perform on big stages.

:salute:

So having said that, why don't you fukk with it?

Battle rap has turned the way of And 1 basketball. No thanks.

Lmao @ folks talking about "Where are the beats" :mjcry:

Ever since they took out beats, and made written battle raps a staple, the artform has been taken to new heights in terms of creativity and popularity. Not to mention, like the OP said, the core rules of Rap are obeyed to the highest degree. Modern acapella battle rap >>>> rambling over a beat at scribble jam
Bunch of Freeway ass nikkas in here

"Put a beat on :mjcry:.....we can't put a beat on?:sadcam: I wanna spit over a track:to:"

No it's not. Battling stripped away the beat to allow the focus to be placed solely on the bars. When there's a beat playin or it's off the top it limits what you can do lyrically. Go watch those old beat battles and compare it to today. Those guys were just making fun of someone's appearance or calling them gay the whole time. It was okay at the time but lyrics have advanced so much it makes the old stuff unwatchable.

I think a lot of people stopped following battles and it became too advanced for their ears. You can't recognize a scheme, set up, punch, entendres, or all the inside jokes/personals if you don't consistently follow the scene. If you love lyricism there's no way you can disrespect the current state of battling.
