wtf does his 50th birthday gotta do with anything sports related :what:

This nikka been retired for 10 years. His last title was 15 years ago. Why we still hearing about him? I don't care if old ass nikkas think he's the GOAT. New age nikkas don't care. I'mma 80s baby, so I don't care about what he did in the 90s.

I want us to talk about todays players not some old nikka that played 20 years ago.

Hopefully when our generation takes over places like ESPN, we won't waste our time talking about nikkas from 20 years ago.

I guess that means you didn't start watching sports until you hit high school, huh? :mjpls:

OP mustve been born in 1989 and didnt start watching ball until 2002

nikkas that was born after 1987 shouldnt be claimed no "80s baby" yo ass belongs in the 90s kid :bryan:

i was born '82 and i began watchin ball since i was 7 and remember all the glory jordan years of the 90s. ima big time miami heat fan (well before wade/bron/bosh or even the zo/hardaway years) and i still admit NOBODY IS TOUCHING MJ. bron might come close, but there is no one that impacted the game with such vile tenacity as JORDAN did. i am blessed to have been able to see that time period. nba was a different game back then, and i miss it. whats called a flagrant foul now may never even be called a foul back then :mjpls:

ESPN did something for Ali's 70th birthday similar to what they are doing for Jordan just last summer... (no Mayweather fans made a thread crying about it either)
they had a week long celebration of Muhammad Ali? really?

I remember one day acknowledging him, not a week long special with progrms talking about his impact in various aspects of American culture.

Their Bill Simmons/Bill Russell special has been all over ABC/ESPN for the past week...
one thing, in the midst of the Jordan hysteria of this week, to honor Bill Russell. Great.

Michael's global impact was just bigger than the rest of those guys.. All super star athletes are not created equal...For their key demo age Mike turning 50 is bigger than Magic or Bird turning 50 because Mike was always a symbol of youth..Even when Bird and Magic were in their late 28's they had that old spirit surrounding them...So we could see them being 50...It's strange and hard to explain but the concept of a 50 year old Michael Jordan is something that was almost impossible to imagine..ESPN does a good job capturing that...
now here i the real crux of the matter. His global impact was bigger, what it really came down to is that Michael Jordan was the first time hyper capitalism entered the sports strata. What ESPN are doing is celebrating Jordan making them money during the February ratings sweeps.

I'm so glad I grew up in the Pre-Jordan era where they made room for everyone and focused on "team":

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQmtKOOBO2I"]1985 NBA Finals Game 6 Intro - YouTube[/ame]

When Jordan came around....it was dikkriding "him" vs. another team.

:krs:

Niqqas can't even see how much they've allowed how he was presented to shape their view of watching basketball today.

I compared ESPN and the sports media's obsession with Mike to a crackhead's obsession with that first hit and that's really what it's all about. Until someone else comes along that can command that type of attention and money nikkas will be hanging on for dear life to Jordan's nuts. Can you imagine when this nikka dies? :dead: The are gonna rename the network MJMN (Michael Jordan Memorial Network). :russ:

Well, I am disagreeing with the OP, swagnificent.
I think MJ deserves all the props, even after leaving the court, by ESPn and the media.

By the way, if you ever get a chance to see the IMAX movie about Jordan, it is awesome. Near the end, it gets boring because it delved into his attempt at professional baseball. He didn't make it out of the minors but the team he played on got a nice bus out of it.

No one else is going to come along.

I forgot which book I read, but it focused on how timing so much mattered.

As a matter of fact, it was the Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. It's like the original MJ (Jackson). The Thriller album (which was not as good as Off the Wall) coincided with the birth of MTV. So with Michael's greatness and that opening, everything fell into place. When you try to reproduce that, the timing is gone and it comes off manufactured. And that's the problem with the NBA and these dumb ass fans. The NBA tried to again manufacture another MJ forgetting that people will not view something as organic and new because that "time" has passed. And these dumb ass fans can't even enjoy athletes in their prime because they're still MJ obsessed.

So a business being about their business upsets you why?

FWIW the Ali celebration was more than just one day and they did get into various aspects of his career and impact in and outside of the ring...Honestly to bring up Ali is ridiculous because the guy is glorified and deified on a level greater than Jordan..You can't have a tee-ball game in Omaha Nebraska without someone wheeling him out for the pre game festivities..

Russell is not a bigger icon than Jordan..In the same vein that Chuck Berry wasn't bigger than Michael Jackson..And your gripes about someone that's 30 years older than him receiving more shine in the current climate is silly..Why spend air time trying to educate someone on an era they didn't see when you can grip them through nostalgia? The E in ESPN stands for entertainment, not education... There isn't a 45 year old man on this planet that ever saw him play live..

Why doesn't ESPN show more love to Ty Cobb than Derek Jeter?

Because it's 2013...

And for those that say they haven't moved on from Michael..What do you call their "all LeBron, all everything, all the time" act they have been promoting since they viewed his H.S games at St. Vincents?

The NBA just does a better job than the other leagues at marketing individual talent.. And Jordan is their gold standard...

born 87
started watching ball 97

saw MJ's last 2 years and I don't think he's on another level from dudes like Shaq, Kobe, and LeBron

all 3 players were IMO more dominant than what I saw from MJ in 97 and 98

its an absolute nonsense that they are doing this. They did not do it for Magic, Bird, Russell, Kareem, or even Willie Mays or Ali.

Then again, ESPN doesnt have much journalistic integrity.

Its nothing against Michael Jordan, but instead the cult of personality that is around him.

We're no better than North Korea with the idolatry. :comeon:

Yeah, let's forget about the past like it doesn't matter. The logic of you youngins is :what: nowadays.

Michael Jordan is one of the biggest reasons that the NBA is played the way it is today and how popular it is and you act like he shouldn't be relevant anymore. And not only that, he's still active in basketball as the owner of a nba franchise.

I will repeat it once again. What does his 50th birthday gotta do with anything?

If they wanna just worship from time to time then at least pick something better. Like the date of his last title or something like that. No other player just gets his birthday celebrated by an entire network.

It's hurt the sport.

It was just one of many factors that created a perfect storm...But the good it did far outweighed the negative...

Nothing has hurt the sport more than the decline of the white American athlete and the inability to find an heir apparent to Larry Bird..

Because as much as people like to credit Magic and Larry for fueling the leagues renaissance.. The dirty little secret it that was more about the passion of white racism than their talents or charisma..
