While Magic and Larry fueled the leagues renaissance (and hell yeah...I wanted them negros to beat them wonder bread Celts)...it was still about the "Celtics vs. Lakers"

The mentality was different back then. It if was about "One on One" it was simply that:

Dr. J vs. Larry Bird - One on One (C64): Intro - YouTube

Yet, there was still room for "team vs. Team" back then.

Lakers vs Celtics Sega Genesis - YouTube

After MJ....it was all about

si-cover-dumars.jpg

The MJ dikkriding was at full tilt.

I'm sorry but the NBA is not the NFL or MLB...It's not about the coaches, owners, tradition or pandering to the fanbases egos.. There's no Fenway, Wrigley or Lambeau Field or institution bigger than just a bunch of talented n1ggas in sneakers in shorts..It's a players league...And 90% of the players are Black..So naturally it's gonna be less popular among middle America...

If you want them to go back to the days when it wasn't about that it's not gonna happen..And for all that talk about how it was much better when it was about the team (uniform) and not individual players..Nobody was watching the Milwaukee Bucks play in 80's and they were a really good team...

And the dikkriding was there in the 80's.. It just was concentrated on two players instead of one...It wasn't Jordans fault that he didn't have a rival.. Trust me they tried....

The NBA "was" about teams, dog. You don't have to limit the NFL and MLB to what you posted. The NBA was beloved collectively when it was focused what was on front of the jersey just as much as it was the back of the jersey. The problem with the NBA is that when you focus on the back of ones jersey, the legs that carry them retire, and so do the fans with them.

Notice that the NBA is the only league that has to "reinvent" itself and have rivalries that disappear depending on the players involved. :heh:

The other great irony in this conversation is that some of the same people saying it is important to inform a new generation on Jordan's greatness, are the same ones who were calling older NBA legends "bitter" and "old" for saying that players from their generation were either equal or better than Jordan.

Hip hop/people in general dikkride tupac and he's been dead almost 17 years

The ironic part is it's mostly young nikkas who were 4 years old when he died and pac didn't impact hip hop like jordan did the nba

Let these revisionists tell it tupac was a hip hop god when he wasn't. He became a martyr after he died and wasn't no where near the greatest at his craft

:usure:

Theres not 1 young player that has entered the NBA within the past 10 years who said they grew up wanting to play like AI or that he was their influence.

Almost every wing player wanted to be like Mike...........and recently they are saying they grew up watching Kobe:yeshrug:

wtf does his 50th birthday gotta do with anything sports related :what:

This nikka been retired for 10 years. His last title was 15 years ago. Why we still hearing about him? I don't care if old ass nikkas think he's the GOAT. New age nikkas don't care. I'mma 80s baby, so I don't care about what he did in the 90s.

I want us to talk about todays players not some old nikka that played 20 years ago.

Hopefully when our generation takes over places like ESPN, we won't waste our time talking about nikkas from 20 years ago.

I was born in 85 and raised on Jordan. I could see why you're tired of him but Jordan was the main reason the NBA surpassed the NFL and MLB in popularity during the 90s.

MJ still making 'em mad.
QRdFpkW.jpg

Somebody please make a similie of Jordan in this picture. That white broad felt the wood

they had a week long celebration of Muhammad Ali? really?

I remember one day acknowledging him, not a week long special with progrms talking about his impact in various aspects of American culture.

one thing, in the midst of the Jordan hysteria of this week, to honor Bill Russell. Great.

now here i the real crux of the matter. His global impact was bigger, what it really came down to is that Michael Jordan was the first time hyper capitalism entered the sports strata. What ESPN are doing is celebrating Jordan making them money during the February ratings sweeps.

Exactly

It was just one of many factors that created a perfect storm...But the good it did far outweighed the negative...

Nothing has hurt the sport more than the decline of the white American athlete and the inability to find an heir apparent to Larry Bird..

Because as much as people like to credit Magic and Larry for fueling the leagues renaissance.. The dirty little secret it that was more about the passion of white racism than their talents or charisma..

Dropping gems

The 3 highest rated NBA Finals in the history of the league were '96, '97 and '98...So if it was really more beloved before that, then there is nothing tangible to prove this...

And if the NBA is the only league that has to reinvent itself why does the NFL product I see on the field today look nothing like the one I watched in the 80's? Why is the emphasis on offense allowing Dan Marino's 30 year old records to get smashed with such ease? Why did Bud Selig turn his eye to dudes looking like The Rock hitting 60 homeruns a year? Everyone has to adjust...People just love picking on the NBA because such an afrocentric league...

If we're picking out individuals, Dr.J/ABA style of play doesn't get the recognition he deserves for carrying the torch for the NBA.

All credit goes to Magic, bird, and then Jordan

From a culture standpoint yeah. Especially among dudes from the hood. They fukked with A.I. more than MJ.

MJ was the GOAT on the court, but off the court? Nah nikkas wasnt really feeling him like that outside his shoes

Of course it was. MJ was at an all time tilt. No one can take that away from him. So why don't you focus on the mass exodus after he left and see that as a flaw?

Pouring all of your resources into one person like the league did in MJ was pure garbage. It didn't allow people to appreciate the greatness of players, so they weren't interested.

MJ put himself in a nice position with Nike and his jerseys. ONLY Nike could sell Jordan jerseys, so with the NBA unable to make money on merchandising MJ, they decided to compete with Nike by dikkriding MJ to death. Fans loved it....and that love left with him. And we're still living in those throes. :manny:

Thank GOD for the NFL not being on the stupid shyt.

I'm not picking on the NBA for that reason.

You're talking about a league that didn't have a human resources department until my homegirl put one together for them 7 years ago. :heh:

Out of the three major sports, they operate along the worst lines and act like a fly by night operation.

There's a whole generation of kids born in 89-99 who are 13-23 now who didn't see jordan on the bulls

I agree espn dikkrides MJ like crazy but talking about jordan gets ratings.I thought it was weird they were doing a 50th birthday celebration for mike but his impact on Tv and the nba in general can't be understated

NO athlete ever impacted a sport like mike did and he impacted the nba in several ways on and off the court he's gonna be talked about years after we're all dead

:comeon:

actin like nobody was checkin for 2pac until after he died or like he was just some average run of the mill rapper who got big after he got shot, name a rapper bigger than pac in 1996. not nas, not jayz, not big, not snoop, not dre, nobody was bigger than pac

2pacalypse now - gold
strictly for my nikkaz- platinum
me against the world= 2x platinum
all eyez on me - 10x platinum

etc. and these were all released before he died. and music is subjective, one man's trash is another man's lil wayne.
