Human nature entails that one seeks the mate with the most desirable genetics.
For men, this is usually the most curvy and physically attractive women.
For women, this usually encompasses the 6 certs, 6 figures, 6 foot male.
Women differ from men a little in the sense that they're more willing to "compromise" if a man has more resources than the majority of potential suitors.
She & her offspring will be provided for which is why men with the most currency or power will never and have never had an issue obtaining the most beautiful women.
It's all primal, but the problem you speak of arises when people just aren't realistic, but we're not really wired to be.
We all operate on emotions - some more than others - and seek to be desired and procreate with those we consider the most desirable.
Its nigh impossible for most human beings to look in the mirror and admit they're not the alpha bytch or alpha male and as such, won't get a "dime."

So the 5'3 male with a receding hairline continues to chase Miracle Watts. Precious believes she's destined to be with a guy that looks like Trey Songz.
They spend time chasing that archetype and ignoring others who show interest, only to become bitter and jaded when they don't get what they feel they deserve.
Most of us date on our level or near it; economically, physically, and otherwise.
That you're completely average is just a hard pill for a lot of people to swallow.
