That's what I'm wondering as well. I assumed a square was a mediocre guy, no special talents, no special looks, nothing really going for himself (mediocre car, mediocre apartment, mediocre tastes in clothing), rarely goes to parties or bars, sits around and really doesn't do much.
Or a socially awkward guy who stays away from the opposite sex because he has some underlying fear of rejection.
