The major fear was that Qaddafi was going to behave in the same way al-Assad is now, a violent crackdown, followed by massacres, followed by a log-and drawn out Civil War and a refugee crisis that would only help in crippling Libya's North African neighbors' good will and a flood of Libyans in to Southern Europe.
It was poorly calculated, and the mission by the US took far too long, predicting the strength and brutality of ISIS and it's affiliated groups was something that was impossible without the power to predict the future.
Its considered a foreign policy disaster simply because it didn't pan out like we'd hoped and the region is (and was already going to be) a mess.

the only good thing about it is that it wasn't an expensive disaster in terms of american blood and treasure. the destruction of libya was happening during the civil war and would have happened anyway and we should have let them fight a civil war without our air support and tell the french and british to fall back because this isn't our business (like we were originally planning to do). just mind ya business when it comes to middle east/north african dictators.

The US government got involved because the Arab Spring presented an opportunity to get rid of Gaddafi and Al-Assad...

They never gave a fukk about the Lybian and Syrian people...

and what exactly is wrong with Assad and Gaddafi behaving violently to put down a group of domestic terrorists that chose to oppose them violently?

In Gaddafi's case the opposition was a minority, the majority of his people actually liked the guy and for good reason...Lybia wasn't some oppressed backwards shythole like Afghanistan...Public education in the country was free and medical care was available to the public at no cost...Under Gaddafi, per capita income in the country rose to more than US$11,000, the fifth highest in Africa...The majority of his people, were living good, just look at pictures of Lybia before the war...



So what was Gaddafi supposed to do when this minority opposition tried to divide his country with violence? Tuck his tail between his legs and give into terrorist demands?
