Why is pop/catchy music frowned upon in hip-hop/R&B?

Out here in my damn drawls
Pop and catchy are two completely different things to me

When I hear catchy, I think of some microwaved cheesy disposable tracks

Catchy hip-hop is fine to a degree, but I personally never like my R&B (rhythm and blues) to have any of those elements. That's suppose to have soul and substance IMO

@SirBiatch so you gonna continue avoiding the topic at hand and deflecting to be a narcissistic or address the fact that Ice Cube, one of the most respected MCs was influenced by a pop & punk influenced hip hop group :patrice:

Or you can't discuss this cause it'd continue to expose how clueless you are :jbhmm:

I don't have a problem with pop music. I have a problem when RAPPERS create pop music. When I listen to a hip hop artist I expect to hear them rap, not sing melodies over a bubbly beat, fukk no

were these rap songs not pop songs?

You don't like "Don't" and "Exchange" by Bryson Tiller? They're very catchy and I would say they have soul.

All the uninformed or lazy hip hop heads saying pop isn't part of the culture need to sit down. Dudes were rap/singing about "true love" since LL. Even Kool G Rap had "She loves me, she loves me not". Melodic/pop songs have existed since the start. It's only frowned upon by grandpa's who only listen to one genre, and its usually gangsta rap.

the funny thing is gangsta rap was pop music and it's the sub style that really put rap in full blown mass consumption:jbhmm:

One of the reasons NWA was as big as they were because the pop song writing structure and influence they derived from other pop influenced acts, the content of lyrics doesn't change the actual song structure. As long as something like that is catchy people will vibe with it

Bryson isn't really rhythmic or poppy. He's more down tempo. I don't see what's catchy about either of those songs

I like those songs, but I would consider them soul and never think "pop" or "catchy"

Who are your favourite non-rap artists? I want to check them out. You seem to have really good taste.
