Over time I think It would result in more involved parents and a higher percentage of the citizenry transitioning into functioning adults.

Again i think what we face is a parenting problem not an education problem, and focusing on the number of kids graduating is how we have let parents of the hook all this time.
Yo, you cannot just make a blanket statement and say "parenting problem" and then move on without justifying that. Moreover, most parents do not have the time or resources to home school. The entire basis of a public education is so that a select elite few aren't the only ones with it. You guys say the most nonsensical things and never think through the application.

Indeed...I didnt say i gained nothing from it...i learned a few good things..Enough to work a cash register, operate machinery at a factory or apply to a college for some further indoctrination.
They also taught me how to be part of a herd..stay in line..dont be disruptive..sit quietly for hours..... I have to say for a 12 year project thats not much

The question is what they didn't want me to learn..Like how to think....analyse..find truth..Understand how the world really works...how to properly research..

and what they took away from me in the process of "standardization"..creativity....intuition....individualism
So, you're saying you went to an awful public school? The entire emphasis by teachers these days is to foster problem solving skills. If all you learned was rote memorization then there is a combination of things that may have lead to that. Why do you think people don't like the focus on standardized exams?

We can take lead out of gasoline but we can't take it out of schools water fountains. I blame the teachers.

:manny: Fair enough im pretty sure one quarter my high school class is doing time somewhere and the other half just got out

But my observations come also from looking for schools for my own kids i dont see these dramatic changes you claim exist these days..i visited at least a dozen and finally picked a small non religious charter school..most of the rest ranged from menacing to mediocre..with few exceptions.

By and large any parent who lets the district choose for them is playing some very long odds

I havent suggested home schooling, removing k-12 and/or privatizing it. Just lifting the mandate.

The only kids not getting an education will be the ones who don't want to and who's parents aren't involved/dont care.
Schools really shouldnt be day cares in my opinion.

So how do you propose we hold parents more accountable without further punishing the kids?

And again what does that have to do with making school optional?

The question is what they didn't want me to learn..Like how to think....analyse..find truth..Understand how the world really works...how to properly research..

Much of this is things you are supposed to learn out of school. And most schools teach you how to think critically and analyze things. But you are putting the duty of parents onto the school which is a great way to guarantee the schools fail

Again, how do you see an increase in uneducated people being a net plus for society?

I'd rather pay for the 8 hour a day custody and education of that kid for 13 years than 24/7 custody of that uneducated, ineligible, damn near guaranteed to be a criminal/drain on society adult for double or triple that. Just from a pure economic POV K-12 is a net plus
