people don't like gambino

it is what it is, can't be like Seinfeld and be obsessed when someone doesn't like you

just like gambino said in an interview there's different styles in hip hop. The people that don't like him listen to other things.

Man, that was Seinfeld's MOM that obsessed when someone didn't like him (because that crazy joe dude didn't like him while moms was visiting). Pretty sure seinfeld (the character on the show anyway) didn't give a shyt ... he didn't like many people anyway.

You know i popped this back in my phone to revisit this. (Reread the screenplay as well) Here's 3 things I took from it.

1. If the screenplay was included in the download this woulda been much easier to digest. I get it though. But yeah the Screenplay takes this from something thats just a good album into something you can connect with. I don't blame people for not going out of their way to peep it.

2. Ludwig is a fukking BEAST. The production on this from start to finish is so polished that it just sounds light-years ahead of whats out there. And not even in the Yeezus way of just using some EDM producers an having some dissonance. The shyt from top to bottom is well mixed and is so pleasing to the ears. A wide-range of styles, and influences from all over its really dope. The dubstep influences of "Crawl", the jazz break on "WORLDSTAR", the break on "Zealots of Stockholm", how cohesive "Telegraph Ave." sounds. Some of these songs I can see myself banging for years.

3. Emo as he his Donald can spit. 3005 is the "corniest" song on the album and the production + the 2nd verse save that for me as well. Nothing is soft for soft's sake...there is always some sort of reasoning behind it (again that's assisted through the screenplay).

In conclusion, if the drop had a lil more buzz and the multimedia aspects woulda been more visible this album coulda been a game-changer in the way that GKMC was...but instead its just a really, really GOOD album.

The screenplay along with the album and how well the site was laid out with the clips etc. Was one of the most innovative things that's ever happened with a hip hop album. Plus I like the album all on it's own Merritt too.

I agree that it was very innovative.

I think that other posters in this thread bring up a good point too, that of the screenplay. I think taken with the screenplay/interviews in character/etc, it is extremely cohesive and creative. Even if I just listen to the album now, I have a better appreciation for everything and can visualize what's going on.

But do you judge the album with the screenplay or without the screenplay? I still think that on it's own, while a bit more disjointed (without the script I think "The Party" and all the instrumental interludes are unneccesary) still a great album. But then again, I'm a bit of bino stan :lolbron:

This album will probably never be looked on as a classic. Maybe a "cult classic", but even then you have to wait and see.

Classic is IDK...:manny:

But it's far and away one of the better rap albums of the last 5 years or so....its TRAGICALLY underrated by the "hip-hop heads". I always said that people who fukks with Drake should by default mess with Gambino as well.

But in my opinion, 'Bino represents the connotative dissonance of the rap, and the black community as a whole. The only reason Drake became valid was through his association with Wanye and Birdman. This is something that Gambino has actively NOT done, trying to get his respect on his own. Dude doesn't even use his real name which could have got him some love in some circles.
For some reason rap fans and black folks are uncomfortable with "white people problems", or the concept that not all of us worry about hood lifestyles. nikkas call it "corny" and look past the fact the nikka can rap and is one of the few artists out here still bringing some wit to his rhymes and not just "flexing" on everyone. Its refreshing.

More than that though its signifying that nikkas are not evolving. I'm not saying everyone in the hood need to be shopping at Whole Foods and ridding fixed gear bikes. But rap has clinged to one image so much to the point where you don't even have to prove that you are telling the truth to be popular. Or you can be a parody of these rap tropes and still be critically acclaimed.

From the vocals to the production Gambino sets himself apart. Now i'm not saying dude is the 2nd coming or anything. But most of the hate against him is clear bandwagoning ignorance, steeped in Black male bravado about things that we don't even believe ourselves.

without the screenplay, the album is not cohesive and it's trash, unfortunately for him, the screenplay is not part of the album.
lyrically, it's 1/5, production wise, it's 2/5 and musically speaking, it's 2.5/5

what the actual fukk are you talking about? :dahell:, sonically the production is crack breh. That shyt bangs hella hard. & lyrically it's some deep conceptual shyt.

I think you need to listen to BTI again. It's really refreshng to hear & lowkey a classic.

Album is a classic to me :yeshrug:

Sonically dude was in a different lane with the experimentation. Yet it all flowed together.

It's like if Take Care were a braver album :ehh:
