Technically we can swim since we all come from a womb full of water. :youngsabo:

You guys are clowning on him, but there's truth in this. They started baby swimming classes because infants are natural swimmers. They just have to be taught not to forget how.

My "unofficial " Godmother and babysitter taught me how to swim. She was white (if that matters) and just looked out for me in case I looked like I was drowning.

I fell to the bottom a few times at the pool at her house but she jumped in to retrieve me like it was nothing:manny:

I was never afraid of the water , which helped me a lot on learning how to swim too.

don't know about other folks but my swimming inexperience actually came from the trauma of almost drowning at sesame place when i was 5. it was at the water slide. i had got stuck in the tube because there wasn't enough water going down the slide. don't know how that happened. i tried to walk my way back up inside the slide. that's when another kid came down the slide feet first and fell right into me. them and me came speeding out of the tube and landed right into the pool. i swear i was at the bottom looking up and couldn't swim my way to the top. i was panicking and everything and that's when the lifeguard pulled me out the water. from that time, i haven't been able to fully learn how to swim even with after getting lessons.

The only thing about the video is that they really didn't explain why generations of black people were taught not to swim. It's one thing to say "don't go near the water, because you can't swim". But black families, generations of them, actively prevented their kids from learning how to swim. The video didn't go into depth on that point.

They put two different points together that aren't necessarily cause and effect.

Swimming pools weren't a commodity in black neighborhoods back in the day

a lot of it is socio-economic. I grew up in Harlem, family in VA, and I went to pools and the beach, comfortable in the water, but definitely couldn't SWIM.

went to camp in Mass when I was like 10 with mostly white kids. there's a swimming test on the first day. definitely failed that shyt. there was this board with tags and everyones name. I had the only red (failed) tag on the board. theres 4 black kids in the whole camp.

immediately took swimming lessons at Riverbank when I got home at the end of the summer.

I'm just saying the deepest pool I swam in was 10 ft. What I am saying is that I am just aware that 10 ft is my maximum(for now). I wouldn't say I can "swim in anything." Sure I can swim to safe my life but I need more work because I run outta stamina and my swimming is not as effective. Plus it depends on the SIZE of the water. Pool=/=lake. I almost drowned in a deep as lake in DR because I didn't know how deep/big it was.:heh: I almost drowned because I got tired swimming across the lake from the area where I jumped from the rope from.:heh:
I coulda told you that. Saying you go waaaay out on the beach but only think you have swam up to 10ft deep.... :laff:

Don't play in moving water it's def not the pool. You have currents to contend with. That shyt will push you all the way out.

Truthfully I can't swim and I'm not afraid to admit it; it has nothing to do with fear either, just matter of choice.

My reason for not swimming is because I don't believe it to be an necessity (nor mandatory) in life since nothing in my life deals with swimming as necessary skill.

During middle school we sometimes had field trips to the local community center to take swimming lessons, I was among the group of kids who sat on the sidelines watching others learn.

Our gym teacher gave us passing grades for just doing work assignments whether it be math, science, social studies etc from other classes during the trip.
