Why was Mos Def's career such a disappointment?

as others have mentioned he had all the attributes to be a super star. He could have easily due to his ability to sing kept his artistic integrity and made great music while still having massive mainstream hits. But tbh i don't think Mos ever wanted that.

He's in my top 10, but I do feel his career didn't reach it's full potential. even if it was just one more great album i think that would have left me happy

Lets hope this Blackstar 2 is great

It probably got too easy for him.

When you make Black Star and BOBS BACK TO fukkING BACK... I mean damn.

Dude reached the zenith of rap supremacy on his first try. Who else besides Nas and Biggie can say what that feels like?

Cube.

You right tho.

Mos has given me Blackstar, BOBS and Ecstatic -3 perfect albums I still fukks with regularly. Then there's all the features and Soundbombing/compilation joints he did.
shyt TRAVELIN MAN isn't even on a Mos album and that's one of my favorite songs of all time.

Mos is easily in my personal top 10. Nothing disappointing about his discography.

Like one of my other goats said:

Yo, too many songs, weak rhymes that's mad long
Make it brief son, half short and twice strong

and on the other hand you got Talib Kweli who put out countless albums and been consistent for a while. If mos had half that work ethic, we'd have more classics from him. Unpopular opinion but Ecstatic was the soulless BOBS, i think people force themselves to like that album because it's the closet thing we'll have Mos to the BOBS form :yeshrug:

Mos had it. Which, sadly, allowed him to coast. He got too deep into character, speaking in his exaggerated blaccent, being a reckless alcoholic, and womanizing to an extent that would shame even a womanizer. That's pretty much all there is to that.
I never heard about those aspects of his life before. Is that true?

Also he did one of those “exclusive albums” that are only available to listen to in certain museums around the world.

It was called Negus.

So he hasn’t stopped making music he just found another hustle for it

He's known to embellish a bit

:duck:

Let's hold it right there. I'm known to be 100% on point with everything I say that isn't an outright prank thread. And nothing I'm saying about Mos is even remotely exaggerated. He's good kid/child actor who put on a persona and got lost in it, lost himself to severe alcoholism, was trying to fukk everything moving, and squandered his talent. Not s single bit of that is unknown to anyone on that scene.

Mos def use to be one of my favorites. That rawkus records run was beautiful.
