How does the movie earn money if it's on HBO max?

From what I'm to understand HBO buys the rights to the film for a set amount similar to how Netflix buys rights to shows, and then they kick back commission based on how much engagement their subscriber-base has with the film.

HBO wins because they already made their money from the monthly subscribers, the movie recovers a lot of it's budget from HBO, and then whatever they earn from the box office/engagement will make up the rest of the money. So how much money the movie made is really dependent on what kind of deal they made with HBO, I'd imagine HBO broke them off a very high number for a simultaneous release.

Will is too big of a star to be doing movies like this. This should have gone to an up and coming actor. Not sure why he picks terrible roles so often.
