This. Waaaay too many artists and genres of music now and choice. Back then you were force fed some artists via music tv and radio now you can go on YouTube and listen to a vast array of never ending unsigned artists. Too put it simply the game is too oversaturated to have a mega pop star like that now.

@Doctor Wily pretty much broke it down but here are the reasons we won't see another Michael.

External reasons:

Thriller dropped when MTV was just getting started. Once Michael changed the way music videos were made, there was no doubt he would be the biggest star of the 80s.

Motown 25 gave him the platform to debut the Moonwalk... just remember millions around the world watched it. That pushed him even further.

He was already a child star and had the experience and knowledge to make hits and use the media to his advantage.

Mike already had the talent but take away MTV and Motown 25.... he wouldn't have shot to those dizzying heights of fame. Those two propelled him to a level we will never see again.

The way music is consumed and distributed now, it would take a miracle to find someone of equal talent to Michael and have the same tools to promote him. Music is too over saturated now.
