Will there ever be an entertainer on Michael Jackson's level?

Not in our lifetime because the way we consume music has changed considerably from his era.

You literally have “top-tier”pop stars and artist out here these days literally begging people to buy their music.
I find the biggest issue now is that artist as just as known for their celebrity as their music. Beyoncé is HUGE but I do t feel her music is as ubiquitous as her name. MJ was that rare artist who broke all boundaries.

People really sleep on B Brown like he's a mattress. Back in the days he was the closest one to giving MJ a run for his money and he had his own style, didn't shark anything from him and built his own wave. Heck even MJ jocked his sound for Dangerous so that tells you whats popping.

In a parallel universe where B stayed clean we would've seen both of these brothers push each other so far creatively, musically and with the steps to create something out of this world because only steel sharpens steel and during his run Brown was coming up hard and had the natural talent to be a problem.

And thats even with the whole "NE sharked J5" thing from back when which goes to show the environment it takes to hone that talent into something even close to MJ.

Big facts...in the early 80's it was Prince, late 80's it was Bobby

bhris would've been a lot bigger had he not fukked up

son goes off on stage

with the real full industry push behind him it'd have been crazy

outside of music is where he really capped himself

he was about to be everywhere every film every commercial

he still keeping his head above water just off his own work ethic but it's not that polished pop product like it would've been

It’s more than just performing. Whitney and Madonna were far larger than Chris in their prime and they still arent MJ level.

This. Waaaay too many artists and genres of music now and choice. Back then you were force fed some artists via music tv and radio now you can go on YouTube and listen to a vast array of never ending unsigned artists. Too put it simply the game is too oversaturated to have a mega pop star like that now.

That and the thing about social media that someone said earlier.
There are a lot of artist but people still are only consuming very few. I feel people consume far less artist than we did years ago.

@Doctor Wily pretty much broke it down but here are the reasons we won't see another Michael.

External reasons:

Thriller dropped when MTV was just getting started. Once Michael changed the way music videos were made, there was no doubt he would be the biggest star of the 80s.

Motown 25 gave him the platform to debut the Moonwalk... just remember millions around the world watched it. That pushed him even further.

He was already a child star and had the experience and knowledge to make hits and use the media to his advantage.

Mike already had the talent but take away MTV and Motown 25.... he wouldn't have shot to those dizzying heights of fame. Those two propelled him to a level we will never see again.

The way music is consumed and distributed now, it would take a miracle to find someone of equal talent to Michael and have the same tools to promote him. Music is too over saturated now.
He capitalized on new media and changed the way things were done but.... he was already insanely popular.

New gen. NO

Prince was GOAT.
Mike was a bigger star.
Morris is legendary, word to @Cat piss martini

Mike was popular, not the best.
Y’all love to mention Prince to diss MJ but I never hear him talked about when other artist like Beatles, Bob Dylan, Stevie, etc are mentioned. Prince talent was unparalleled but he wasn’t the best all around imo.
For instance, Stevies prime catalog is better

Speaking on Prince, I think that was just a de facto kind of competitor they just threw in with MJ just because. B Brown on the other hand was much more equal footing due to the similarities and how you could tell he wanted that crown and really did have the talent/fanbase to be a problem.

Not to throw no shade on Prince, he was undoubtedly talented and obviously didn't march to the beat of the commercial drum but in terms of art, impact, catalog, legacy etc.. he isn't anywhere on MJs level. Neither was B from what we saw but he could've been.

If you were around back when Brown was on his come up you'll know what I'm saying as he had the game in a choke hold and wasn't even trying and all that was just him bubbling as we never saw his Thriller moment.

The Beatles are and were definitely bigger they're the best selling act ever for a reason.
No they’re not bigger. MJ is known far more country for county.

‘It means that they are big in markets which are themselves very big. The US, the UK, Latin America, Canada, Japan, France, Spain, Italy, etc. These are all places where one can get a lot of views, and these are all markets where the Beatles are strongly popular.

In the other side, if we look at their bottom 10 markets in popularity, they are Morocco, Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Trinidad and Tobago, Algeria, Cambodia, Tunisia, and Iraq. All countries where foreign artists sold virtually nothing.

How can we interpret these results? We can say that they are larger in markets that were already kinda structured when they were active. We can also say that they are someway lucky that their sound is the most popular where sales happen to be the highest. Their success has been exploited incredibly efficiently.

If they are a bit less global than one could have though, it’s worth noting that they sold bucketloads everywhere, even in markets which are relatively low for them. It’s the trademark of legendary artists, to outperform most competitors where you don’t even do that well for your standards.’

https://chartmasters.org/2019/07/beatles-global-heatmap/

So far, we published 10 global heatmaps analysis of very different artists, going from Elvis Presley to BTS. We identified mainly two kind of profiles. Old school stars, with a success more focused over English-speaking countries, Scandinavia plus regions with a music industry developed for more time like occidental Europe and Japan. Then, younger artists saw their performance in Latin America and Asia shine since they competed with acts who weren’t promoted there back in their day. Also, all acts were dominant in some regions and weaker in others, with an elasticity often exceeding 10 to 1 between the best and the worst markets.

The picture is completely different with Jackson, his heatmap looks like nothing else. He has got both greener and redder countries in every continent. It’s impossible to really tell where he dominates. His top 3 performers are Romania, from Europe, Dominican Republic, from America, and Cambodia, from Asia. They have different languages and completely different cultures, same for Bangladesh following at the #4 position.

Even more stunning is their strength. They onlyexceed the average by 55-60%, except Romania which is a bit higher. These are very low tops. All artists studied so far had their top markets with a strength over 2, meaning they topped scale acts by 100% or more. In the other side of the spectrum, all artists had markets strongly underperforming our reference. Jackson has none. His worst country, Ireland, still records 54% of views of other acts in that same market proportionally speaking. He has 94 out of his 100 listed markets that top 72% of the average, meaning his truly bad ones still compete with standards of others. They do in relative terms. In absolute terms, even Ireland, his last market, records a huge 422,000 monthly views, more than 3 times the total of Meat Loaf, the best performer from our database in Ireland proportionally speaking.

Basically, Jackson is massive everywhere. He performs so well in every area that all markets are close to the average share of scale artists, he has no weak point. His 2018 total of views tops by nearly 10% scores of the Beatles, Elvis Presley, and Madonna… combined. That’s why he doesn’t own countries that have over the top results, because there is very little room for improvement in comparison to the others.’

It also would've kept Mike sane because the only competition he felt he had was himself and this would've given him a different focus/mindset which really would've helped. And thats even with the whole "NE sharked J5" thing from back when which goes to show the environment and lifelong dedication it takes to hone that talent into something even close to MJ.

Bobby was nowhere near close. Prince was larger than he. Bobby was a flash in the pan and was never going to have prolonged success. Whitney was far closer to bring MJ dominant than Prince or Bobby.

I don't even think it's possible. Part of the allure was mystique. Nowadays entertainers put their entire lives on social media. They just seem like regular people who are talented. Mike was a GAWD.

This is the clear example. Name any entertainer that can stand still for almost 2 minutes and have a stadium full of people loosing their minds.

can’t watch it. NFL blocked the video :hhh:
