super stardom takes time

FYI, 4 out of the 8 superstars listed became superstars within the last decade.

I feel Kendrick Lamar praise is more hype based than actual superstar potential. Ive been a fan of this kid for years. And even I can tell you that Section 80 is better than GKMC. However that Interscope machine got the general public gassed.

this is a big part of it

you need to have that major label backing

When I think about it your right Rihanna is a superstar but she's been in the game for a minute when you think about it.

been in the game a minute?

Rihanna came out in 2005, that was 7 years ago

Are people expecting musicians to become stars instantly?

it takes time

I concur with everyone who say Drake is the only one in that HOV lane.

Future?:dwillhuh: Am I missing something? I mean, I don't really listen to his music like that but the shyt I have heard (Tony Montana, Same damn time, Turn out the lights, Magic) has either been completely ass or had him outshined by everyone else featured on the track. Does he have some mixtapes I haven't heard or something?:wtf: I've always thought he was a joke rapper and made himself sound purposely bad with that autotune shyt? I really don't see how he could ever be a superstar - maybe he'll reach Waka's level at best.:what:

cube and wu-tang were not stars

:stopitslime: .....you gotta be like 18
Cube was probably the biggest name in rap at the beginning of the 1990's for a good 2-3 years and one of the first rap nikkas to be in films

Have you not seen The Show? Wu was packing venues in the US and Japan......people camped in line overnight for Wu-tang Forever kid

Nelly. Luda is in the top 10 for sales and has gone 5x platinum with 3 or 4 multi-plat albums. Kanye also. 50 obviously.

Tip coulda got there with Paper Trail but couldn't tour off it. Wayne.

That's it for hip-hop in the last decade.

Since then the closest has been Drake & Nicki who have flirted with superstardom.

The most legitimate measure of old school stardom is album sales

There are only like 4 rappers still moving Ma$e units. Drake being the newest

OP got it right... dudes like ASAP and Future are popular... but they're not stars. In 5-10 years they will be in that "hey yall remember so and so" camp, while Jay will be claiming 50 is the new 23

:deadrose:

cube and wu-tang were not stars

:rudy:

Anyway, I was just thinking that all megastars had those HUGE hits that everyone instantly associated with that rapper...California Love...Let me riede...What's My Name...Today was a good day...In da club...Ruff Ryder's Anthem...Hard Knock Life...BIG POPPA...Thru the Wire...do Drake and Nikki have those instantly recognizable SMASH HITS that will still be getting play down the road? I don't know of any :yeshrug:

For Nikki, "Starships" and "Turn me on" are her recognizable smash hits... Both those tracks got regular spins on pop stations and probably got really high on the Top 40 charts..

As for Drake... "Find your Love" is his smash hit.

Real talk

One could say the same thing about Kanye in 2002, Jay-z in 95 , Lil Wayne in 04 , 50 cent in 99 , you jus cant guage these type of things.

Keeping it real the next rap superstar is prolly some obscure nikka right now.

Shiit it may even be Mac Miller for all we kno :leon:
