Copped Win8 a few months back for $39.99 off microsoft website. Still haven't installed it... Win7 is more than enough for most people.

been using windows 8 for months. no problem with it. it's now my main driver. i don't miss the start menu because i never used it in windows 7. i put shortcuts to my most used apps on my taskbar or on the desktop. no reason for me to go back to windows 7.

the new start screen? i like the design. it's clean, but it might be too minimalistic. some apps are missing some features, need more customization options. like i need a clock/date in the lower or upper right corner of the start screen. being able to change the background pic to your own. just little things like that could go a long way. but overall there could be improvements for desktop kb/mouse users. there should be a hybrid mode where the start screen is in a window on your desktop. maybe have it's own button on the taskbar to open it. but this is probably a windows 9 feature.

That wouldn't scale well for tablets. Laptops are slowly going away so optimizing a UI for a tablet is a higher priority than optimizing an OS for laptop and desktop.

Don't get it twisted I got a Surface Pro docked at work powering two 1080P monitors.

I installed Windows 8 back in December and have no issues with it. I did install "Classic Shell" to bring back the start menu and I boot straight into desktop mode. Works perfectly fine. The new start screen isn't hard to use, but I don't find myself using it very much (this is on a desktop). For people who are computer illiterate there will be a learning curve. Anybody who's posting on this forum should be able to figure out how to configure it to their liking by doing some Google searches. It's definitely not trash.

what did you pay M$ to do? I Ain't downloading no damn classic shell when their OS should be on point out the box. I need to be Computer literate to click on a tile???....that means my grandmother could use/get a computer with windows 8 without technology intimidation if it was usable. you know what the CNN & ESPN tile is for! going to a web-browser ain't easy for anyone that doesn't have a computer!

metro looks like crap and why would I want apps when I can go to a web-browser and have multiple tabs open?!?! ain't that just bloatware?

I enjoy apps on my phone even though I could go to the website...but I do like the notification abilities and the optimization for certain feature. Also, the apps tend to be faster than the website on a mobile phone.

To give me a good O/S. Which they did. 8 has given me absolutely no problems. There have been improvements with 8, too: it's less resource-intensive than 7 and is much more secure with Windows Defender. You don't have to use Metro. Your grandma doesn't have to use metro. She can just press the Windows key and immediately go to the desktop (or you can click the tile labeled "desktop"). Some people are absolutely fine with not having a start button. I'm not, but I'm not bytching about it. There are tons of programs that don't come with windows that people install, one more (classic shell, or any other free start button program) isn't going to kill me.

If you had to install classic shell, clearly M$FT did not meet your needs immediately.

The fact that you could or can is irrelevant. The fact that you DID. You cannot sweep it under the rug.

Or fukk it, keep sweeping it under the rug and every month or two when the numbers come out (as they already have) and you see that the adoption rates are laughbly bad and that not even grandma wants this shyt...

If MetroModern User Interface for Windows 8 x86 and Windows RT for the WinRT API were toned down and it functioned like Dashboard it might have been good.

I could give two fukks about that.

Do I think not including a start menu was a mistake? Yes. Some don't. And if I really wanted to, I could get along without it, but I'm lazy :yeshrug:
It's still a good O/S regardless. For $35, I'm more than satisfied.
