It’s truly a remarkable situation...
Jeezy, Ross & TI all had way more commercial success than Gucci ever did...
Yet here we are in 2018 forcing ourselves to listen to another Ross, Jeezy or TI album. I knew TI might be on his last leg when he was using that God awful cadence on “All About The Money” in an attempt to keep up Thugga who was so effortless
Gucci has the potential to join the ranks of E-40 & Too Short as elder statesmen who are consistently sought out throughout the years for what they specifically bring to the table.
So how did we get to this point? To piggyback off of some of the other points Gucci made excellent investments in young talent years ago which has paid dividends. It also just so happened where the younger generation of artists and fans gravitated to his music more than the others so he can still get on songs and do his thing to where he sounds like now since most of these kids are doing some sort of variation of his old material anyhow
My next point is a little different though. The current southern generation is unapologetically southern. There are few attempts to make music palatable for east coast fans. Ross, TI & Jeezy Have all been guilty of making music that is digestible for NYC at some point or another. Ross & Tip have placed a great deal of emphasis on being MCs who can hold their own with anyone. Gucci on the other hand never deviated from that country grit. Sometimes he says something hot but not in a “Gucci has bars kind of way”. Ross, TI & Jeezy also have shown a inability to mentor southern acts that make a name for themselves and in turn add to their legacy
Add all that up and that’s why Gucci is still rollin along
