How important is the salary vs. time for your personal life? Would you take a job paying $200K/yr but it meant working 80-100 hrs a week with no weekends off? Or would you take a job that pays $50K/yr but only has you putting in max 40 hours and not working weekends ever?

I have seen people time and time again quit a high paying job because it is just too demanding. My cousin's husband was an engineer making serious bank. But he worked so many hours sometimes he would sleep in his car while at work because he figured the drive home plus trying to eat and getting ready for bed would cost him hours of sleep because he had to be up and right back to work in less than 6 hours. :francis:

To me what is the point in making a lot of money if you can never enjoy it?

If you can be paid $200k annually can you generate the same yourself via consulting or self employment ?

If you have no kids then do the 100 hours. If you have kids then the 40hr cap is good ideally but in reality you'll pull 60-70 hours.

Better start building your side hustle incase they make you obsolete @ work and fire you cos then you're well and truly fukked.

You gotta factor in that person working 40 hours/week making 50K will be doing that until they are 60-70 most likely. What work-life balance is that in the long run?

Nobody retires early on that pay anymore.

Give me the 200K/year job for 5-7 years, I'll stash most of that money away -- since I'm working all the time, it's not like I'll be blowing it like the 50K person going on vacation and the club every weekend.

Then I'll quit and start my own shyt.

The ideal situation is having a 9-5 while working on a side hustle until it eventually pays more than your full time so you can quit and have more control over your schedule by the time you're sick of taking orders.

I feel like you should sacrifice work/life balance early on - like post college - 30 (or before you start a family). Those high paying long hour jobs usually have some sort of prestige, once you set the benchmark for yourself as far as qualifications and salary, it's a bit easier to find another high paying job that's more accommodating to a balanced lifestyle. Like you may pull 80+ hour weeks for that 200k job for 2-4 years, but when you're ready to bounce you go find a $140k/yr job that hits for the normal 40-50 hours.

But long term - happiness/fulfillment >> money. If you're lucky and have a job that you love and it's part of your happiness equation, great, but if you're like most of people, working to afford to do the things that make you happy or pursue a passion, then don't go killing yourself with long hours.

200K a year working 80 hours a week. Ideally 2 jobs, remotely working making 100K each...cause truth is I would be working 80 hours a week.

Yeah live like you making 50 k and work a couple of years in those jobs. Doing that job means your resume has way more power than it did before. Invest that money into paying off college debt, savings account and college debt. You can really change your financial life in those couple of years.

I would slave for that 200k for 20 years and just retire off that and enjoy post retirement at 40. But at the same time, life would be boring without any form of work to do. You can't be on vacation 24/7.

Actually you can get an easy part time job that gives you 15hours a week pushing carts at Walmart or some other easy shyt after you retire.
