Would it be fair to say Pop Smoke was more important to NYC rap than Big L?

Yall use the word "star" very loosely. He had the New York stimulus which causes some of yall to believe he was hot like that everywhere. They both were local sensations. Big L was far less of a local sensation because New York actually had real stars back then and were less desperate for anyone to pop,no pun intended.

Id actually say outside of New York,Big L got the much better posthumus rub if we keep it a buck. I remember people being put on to him after he died and legitimately becoming fans.

Not sure how you dismiss big Ls influence on punchline rap. I dont even know how much influence he actually had. But i know to many outsiders he was one of the gateways into punchline rap. And when you heard the term "punchline rap" he was considered one of the pioneers. His posthumus star rose more than Pops did which should kill this argument.

It was a phony movement built on hope. Which is why when he died, there wasnt much mourning. It was moreso "Okay,he dead so who else can we put out front to keep this thang rolling and bring New York back:why:?"

Big L was discovered posthumusly, but for the fans who found him it was more authentic than many of Pops fans:respect:
Pop Smoke is five times platinum, has multiple videos with over 500 million youtube streams and many more with over 100 million. That's a star.

Big L would be fighting for the same steak as Kiss, Banks & Fab if he lived.

That type of rap has merit and all them guys are very talented but he wasn’t exactly Rakim, Jay, Big, Nas, Prime Prodigy levels of imagery, dexterity or flow

L would’ve been on 2000 Rocafella, he would’ve predated all of them and had his own lane with a bigger platform than all of them

I enjoy Pop's music but Big L rapped with and against the greats

Pop made songs with Fivio Foreign and trashcans like that

it is what it is

I would have to agree.

Big L’s influence was felt more so after the internet boom in the 2000s where his songs and freestyles generated a lot of buzz from fans worldwide.

The impact still wasn’t as bigger as Pop’s was . Pop Smoke was the face of a sub genre that was rapidly becoming popular and mainstream. His album went #1 and did numbers after his death. I’m convinced that he would’ve still did numbers if he was alive and NY drill would’ve brought NY back completely into the 2020s.

The chicks and guys were bumping his shyt….even the older heads.

Pop was the last of the Yn’s that I really felt. That boy had next and they killed him. :mjcry:

Unique voice, great songs and style. Kid was a star and they killed him like a roach. Big L was dope and I grew up to that but Big L’s impact was nowhere near pop.
